'i tell the world i'll sing a song
it's a better place since you came along.'~better place~

i left jack's house about an hour ago. his sister tried to get me to stay for dinner, but i quickly declined.
i knew i was already going to be in trouble when i got home and i didn't want to make it worse.
i sighed as i walked up my driveway to my trashy looking house.
and yes. it actually was trashy looking.
more than half the windows had wood over them since the glass had been broken during one of the many fights between my parents.
we're too broke to replace them.
the rest of the house wasn't in better condition. the roof could barely even be considered a roof. most of the shingles were falling off onto our dark brown, almost black, dead lawn that was full of weeds.
paint was chipping off the house.
the outward appearance of the house didn't fully express the horrors that went on inside, i noted as loud screams could be heard from inside.
my parents never even bothered to be quiet when they fought. they could care less what everyone else thought.
sighing, i walked around to the back of my house. luckily, the ladder was still attached to the second level of the house.
the only way i can get in and out of my house without my parents noticing is climbing up this ladder i installed and going in threw my bedroom window. (hopefully that makes sense and y'all can envision what i'm trying to say)
i quietly climbed up the ladder and stepped onto the roof. keeping perfect balance, i reached over the side of the roof and pulled up the ladder so it could no longer be accessed from down below. i carefully walked to my window, opened it, and slipped inside.
the argument between my parents was louder once i was in.
i quickly, but quietly, closed the window and sat down on my bed, if you could even call it that. it was basically just a blanket on the floor, which was a thin, stained carpet that scratched at my skin with every touch. i had to use my backpack as a pillow since my parents took mine.
i'm honestly happy that they let me have a blanket.
sitting down on my 'bed', i pulled out my homework, trying to get as much done before my parents decided to bring me into their argument like they always do.

it hadn't even been an hour since i had started my homework when my parents burst into my room.
'zachary fuckin dean!' screamed my dad as he burst into my room, my mom following closely behind.
'y-yes?' i asked.
'why the fuck are you still here?!' yelled my dad.
'why aren't you out doing you fuckin job?' added my mom.
'i'm sorry, dad. i was-' a loud slap echoed in my room followed by a stinging sensation on the side of my face.
'i told you to never fuckin call me that!' seethed josh (zach's dad's name).
's-sorry,' i quivered back, forcing myself not to touch my burning face.
'we don't want your fuckin apologies, cunt! just get the fuck out of our house and do your fuckin job!' spat myta.
'yes, ma'am ,' i replied.
'and don't expect any food when you get back,' she added.
gulping, i nodded and quickly got up and went into my closet to change my clothes.
i was starting to regret not accepting sydnie's offer for dinner.
i grabbed my leather jacket that had been stuffed under a pile of clothes in my closet. i didn't have the luxury of dressers or hangers. plus, i hated this leather jacket with a burning passion. i buried it under clothes so i didn't have to look at it.
when i walked back into my room, my parents were gone.
slipping on the jacket, i quickly walked downstairs. thankfully, my parents weren't in sight.
i quickly took advantage of my good luck and rushed out the front door and headed to my job.
