I wake up on the brisk Saturday morning it is and put on my ripped jeans and sweatshirt. I walk downstairs and make my morning coffee. While I'm at the counter sipping my coffee I'm looking through my Snapchat and I see Josh's location on the map. I spit out my coffee and grab my keys to go see him.
I'm driving down the road going as fast as the speed limit would let me. Every stop light I'm at, I'm tapping my foot on the floorboards impatiently waiting for it to turn green. The minute it turns green I speed off on the track to the hospital once again.
I pull into the parking lot and park quickly. I'm so crooked, but I hop out anyways and grab my keys. I put my lanyard around my neck and walk into the hospital. I get that scary medicine smell and check into the front desk impatiently tapping my foot as she looks through the patients list. I find myself getting too impatient and take a deep breath, just getting more of the smell. I tell her his name one more time and she says he's in room 437. I quickly walk to the elevator and push the button leading to the fourth floor.
The doors finally open and I get pushed by a huge wave of people getting into the elevator on floor three. I'm squished inside an elevator with around 15 people other than me, and one of them has extreme B.O. The doors slide open once again and I push my way through the crowded elevator. I go to the desk on the fourth floor and confirm that he's in room 437.
"Room 437 is his room correct?"
"Yes it is." She slides her glasses lower on her nose and says, "are you Emily Cavanaugh?"
"Uh, yeah. How did you know?"
"Josh has been waiting for you to come and see him all day."
"Oh, um, then I'm going to go now."
"Ok, don't be too long though he's still injured." She says with a little smirk on her face. I wonder what that's all about as I go down the hall. Each step I take seems like it's echoing forever and ever. I finally make it to his room and knock on the door. A figure opens the door. I look up and see Josh holding a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates. All I can do is tear up as he asks if I'll be his girlfriend. I give him a huge hug and take the flowers and chocolates from him still half-crying. He wipes the two tears I shed and smiles that stupid smile of his.
"It was just a major break, but it'll be fine as long as I don't walk on it too much." He says gesturing to his boot on his foot.
"You really didn't have to."
"But I wanted to." He says with a smile. "Do you want to get some cold stone? I'm really feeling something cold right now.
"It's 30 degrees outside."
"Yeah, never mind. Are you down for some hot chocolate at Starbucks?"
I nod and he puts his arm around me embracing me in another warm hug as we limp together to the elevator I was just in.
