COOPER

I have made up my mind. I didn’t feel like being misled again. I have ruled out one potential love fiasco in the name of Jerome Lancaster. I wouldn’t want Angelo to be the exact carbon copy of how I led my own heart with the same sort of mistakes.

“Who’s the girl in the photo?”

“When… How did you get that?” His eyes narrowed for a bit before shot up wide again their sockets and he struggled to move from his laidback position on the bed towards me by the bathroom door.

“Did you go through my stuff?”

I shook my head because that was definitely the truth. I woudn’t stoop down so low and tarnish whatever trust he had in me. I looked at him straight in the eyes once he stood up close facing me, the photo in question hidden behind me folded slightly in my hands. I knew he would want to grab it from me but he need to clear the air first.

“I found it on the floor, by the dresser.” I pulled a straight face and I wouldn’t dare show any sort of flaw in the truth uttered. “I dropped a dime from my wallet so maybe it dropped from yours too?”

He took another deep breath in before the laborious sigh followed.

“That’s my daughter.”

“From your ex-girlfriend?” His shoulders slumped immediately as if admitting defeat. He didn’t show his concerns much through his entire advances so far. Despite only clad in a pair of dark blue tight-fitting Renoma boxer-briefs, I held in my strong willpower not to fall for it. He needed to speak up and then only maybe I will return the precious photo back to him.

“No, she’s my wife and I’s kid.”

“I’m sorry for being such a nosey bitch but you have a wife?”

“I don’t feel like talking about this please. Not now.” He didn’t look like he was even trying to fight me off or retrieve the photo back by force as I initially predicted. He simply lowered his face down towards the carpeted floor, breathing heavily through his nostrils with that indeterminable sort of contained anger and also, disappointment.

“Okay I won’t ask anything more. Here you go. I’m sorry.”

I handed him the small passport-sized photo, cut neatly to fit into a special compartment of his wallet. Again, I am not that stupid. I would never be too nasty and look through his stuff without his consent. I wouldn’t even consider myself that desperate. I wouldn’t like to be treated that way either but alas, curiosity got the best of me after I found the photo and I may have hurted him a lil inside with the sudden incessant probing for his past.

Sue me if you want but I just… I just wanna get to know him better as a person inside and out. I want to spend a lot more time with him in order to do so and I would gladly be open about my own insecurities and qualms just to coax him to do the same. I wouldn’t want to give up on us either but I had always had to put my walls up, just in case.
