Kelsey’s POV

For a moment I felt my heart beating hard against my chest as I looked straight ahead to the car in front of me but when I looked up and saw Matthew coming out of the driver’s side I wanted to laugh, our encounters haven’t been exactly pleasant and just this morning the roles were reversed, I was the one almost running him over. I frowned lightly when he walked closer and I took a good look at him, he looked awful.

-I think you got your revenge…- I mumbled trying to sound casual.

-Are you okay?-

-Yes, don’t worry. I just had a heart attack, nothing I can’t control.- He got a little bit closer and took one of my hands, I’m not sure why he did it but it didn’t really bother me at all.

-Are you sure you’re fine?-

-Eh, yes… are you? You look horrible- I gave his hand a little squeeze.

-Bad night.-

-Your lip…-

-I know, I know. Let me take you home.-

-I want to live, I can go walking.-

-Oh come on… it wasn’t that bad.-

-You almost killed me.-

-You almost killed me too, just a few hours ago.- He raised his eyebrows and I couldn’t help smiling at his comment. I kept my eyes on him for a few seconds and then nodded.

-Take me home.-

I nodded again and once we both got into his car he told me to put on my seatbelt and I made a joke about it. When he started the engine I told him where my house was, we were really close so in less than ten minutes we were already there. He parked the car outside and we got out, walking towards the gate, once I opened I entered the little garden on the other side and looked back at him.

-Are you really okay?-

-Yes, just tired.-

-Let me take care of your lip…-

-What?-

-I said let me take care of your lip, you brought me home after all.-

-Are you sure?-

-Come on Matt, I’ll just clean the wound, there’s nothing wrong with it.-

Without waiting for an answer I took his hand again and pulled him to the door, although he didn’t really show any kind of resistance. When I stopped to look for my keys on one of my pockets I noticed how he was looking around with his back against the wall, waiting for me to open the front door. Once I did it I moved to the side to let him in, he shook his head and motioned with his hand for me to go inside first. I smiled at the gesture and walked inside, shutting the door once he did the same behind me and turning on the light.

-I’m sorry for the mess, I’m still unpacking- I nodded to a couple of boxes stacked on the corner.

-You should see my apartment, the only difference is that I’ve been living there for two years.-

-A lover of order, uh?- I said sarcastically walking towards the bathroom.- Sit down, I’ll get the medical kit.-

I moved my hand over the wall for a couple of seconds until I found the light switch, and then I took a couple of steps towards the sink to open the small cabinet underneath it and take the kit. I looked at myself in the mirror when I got up and pulled my hair back with my free hand, before cleaning the make up under my eyes. I usually don’t wear a lot of makeup, only a bit of mascara, but after the whole day it got ruined.

-What are you doing?- I jumped startled when I saw Matt leaning against the door’s frame with a smile on his face.

-God, you really want to kill me today.-

-It’s just payback for what happened this morning… and for stealing my pencil.-

-Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was that important.-

-Your hair looks nice.-

-I’m sorry?-

-Your hair looks nice, you didn’t need to fix it.-

-Hum… yeah. Why are you saying that?-

-A simple “thank you” was enough.-

-Thank you…- I smiled a little embarrassed and walked towards him, turning the light off. It was dark but even then I could see him staring at me and blushed deeply- Is there any problem?-

-No.-

-Then, you should go back to the living room.- He chuckled turning around to do what I said and sat down on the couch once he got there. I followed him and put the kit besides him before I knelt down on the floor.

-Why did you move here?-

-That question is too personal for someone I just met, don’t you think?-

-Well, I’m sitting on your couch and we almost killed each other, I think we’re already close friends.- I laughed and took a ball of cotton to put some disinfectant on it.

-I want a new beginning, that’s all.-

-It’s a little too far away just for “new beginning”… ouch!-

-I’m sorry.- I mumbled when I heard him and he just shook his head.- Nobody knows me here, what’s better to start again than a place where no one knows your past.-

-Interesting point of view. So, there’s a past you want to hide.-

-I won’t answer that.-

-It wasn’t a question.-

Matt was a weird guy, weird in the best sense of the word, at first I thought he was pretentious but now I see my first impression of him wasn’t the best, of course the fact that I almost ran him over with my car had something to do with that, anyone would be pissed off if something like that happened to them. It’s funny, I should be worried about it because I never let myself trust so easily but for some strange reason he made me feel safe. I cleaned up his wound and cupped his cheek with my hand, noticing his skin was really hot.

-I think you have a fever.-

-It’s nothing, trust me.-

-Do you really feel okay?-

-Calm down Kels, it’s nothing serious.- ¿Kels? I hated when people called me that, but it didn’t annoy me when he used that nickname… I really had to clear my mind.

-I’m not gonna let you drive like that.-

-Excuse me?-

-You can stay here tonight.-

-No, I mean… it’s too much. I appreciate it but I should go back home.-

-Stay.-

-Why are you insisting so much?-

-I just think you shouldn’t drive like this, you almost killed me, maybe someone else won’t have my luck and survive.- I said fast, he was right, I sounded weird asking him to stay but I have to admit I was worried. I didn’t like the idea of him driving in that state.

-I’ve been worst…-

-Stay, please.- What are you doing Kelsey? I thought.

I put my hands on his knees, looking straight into his eyes, I had no idea what I was doing be he didn’t do anything about it either. We were both doing strange things for two people who met each other just for a day and, thinking about all our encounters, we should hate each other… but we didn’t. He was right there, looking at me with those tired eyes and when I saw him nod the only thing I could do was smile.
