"You always seem to try your hardest to beat me but you just can't," my uncle says collecting the deck of cards and stacking them on top of each other.

"I'm better than Monty" I defend.

Monty was a cousin who lives in Montréal. He comes every month to visit the family and get beaten and lose all his money at poker with my uncle.

"No one is as bad as Monty, I wonder how he hasn't lost hope at one day beating me" I laugh at the statement.

"Detention calls, Ivy"

"Don't remind me , I have to sit a full hour doing manual labor" I grunt in annoyance.

"Next time pay attention in class," he says.

"As if that's ever going to happen"

"Enjoy detention dear, see you tomorrow" he walks to the door and opens it for me.

"Bye uncle Jen"

"Bye Ivy"

"Bye Ivy"

I walk through the halls and notice that all the classes have already been let out. I walk to the detention classroom and take out my phone. I usually do this when the teacher isn't there.
There are missed calls and 10 texts from Jace.

This guy is crazy.

He's just worried about you.

It doesn't mean anything.

Jace🆘- Where are you?
Jace🆘- I've been looking everywhere for you
Jace🆘- Are you alive?
Jace🆘- Just wanted to tell you that I wanted to talk to you and see how you're doing
Jace🆘- I brought you food from the restaurant you love so much
Jace🆘- I ate the food by myself by the way
Jace🆘- If that's what you're wondering
Jace🆘- I'm talking about food and you're not answering
Jace🆘- Are we still up for 20:00 tonight?
Jace🆘- Oh and don't change my name to Jace the stalker 👀 I'm just worried about you ❤️
Me- Hey, sorry for replying late, I was called to the principal's office 😋 spent the rest of the lesson playing poker
Jace🆘- Did you win?🏆
Me- No but I got detention 😶
Jace🆘- 😂
Jace🆘- How long?
Me- 1️⃣ hour
Jace🆘- Babe I told you to pay attention in class
Me- As you know I don't do everything I'm told 🦂
Jace🆘- I'm very well aware 🤦‍♂️
Jace🆘- Rebecca is dragging me through thousands of shops 🏬
Me- See you tonight 😈
Jace🆘- Enjoy the manual labor detention has to offer
Me- 🖕
Jace🆘- 😽❤️

I close my phone as the teacher comes through the door.

 Another student joins her.

The boy sits down at the back of the classroom and throws his backpack on the ground.

"Hello I'm Miss Geneva and I'll be taking care of detention this afternoon"

"I don't know if you're aware of this but the principal has decided to extend your detention to another hour" the teacher adds causing the boy behind me to grunt and swear under his breath.

I hear his grunt because I've done it before.

The fact that the detention has been prolonged is nothing new. They usually do it as they need the kids to complete tasks that need janitors. The school doesn't want to pay for that so they just make the kids in detention do it. They call it 'punishment for your actions' as if what we did was really that bad.

"Today you will be moping the gym floor and mowing the soccer pitch lawn," the teacher says.

"The equipment you will need to perform these tasks is waiting for you at the soccer pitch and the gym. You can start at whatever location you want" she adds

"Go on"

The boy stands up from his chair and walks towards the end of the classroom. I put my hand on his chest to stop him from going further. He stands still as if waiting for a signal from me.

"Pro tip from someone who spends every afternoon in detention; don't let them see your weakness. Let's stick together to get the work done faster"

"My names Bruce by the way and you're the famous Ivy, hotter in person I must say"
I smile at him knowing he and I will get along just fine.
