Seungwan and Joohyun laid down on the grass of Joohyun's house's backyard next to each other. It was 1am, yet the reason they felt tired was not the time.
"Seungwan..." Joohyun whispered, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
"Yes, Joohyun?" Seungwan replied with a weak voice.
"I saw... I saw another star falling."
"Oh..."
The two girls tried their hardest not to cry. For a few weeks, stars had been falling from the sky. Each time a star fell, it meant a person's hope had disappeared, and so had they. It was inevitable, nothing could stop the stars from falling. People had tried, scientists had investigated to try and find the cause of the falling stars and had tried to find some way to stop it, but they simply hadn't been able to.
At the moment, Joohyun and Seungwan were just looking up at the sky, an almost starless one. Every minute, they could see a star disappear from the sky, and it just filled them with despair. They knew their turn would come eventually, so all they could do was wait.
Wait for their turn to come.
Wait for them to disappear.
Wait for their stars to fall.
"Do you think... that there was anything we could've done to prevent this?" Joohyun asked with a shaky voice. "I mean us as in humanity. There has to be some reason for this, and I wouldn't be surprised if humanity had something to do with it."
"Honestly... I really don't know," Seungwan replied. "But thinking about it won't change anything. I've never believed in fate, but I guess, since we won't be able to stop it, that it's our fate to disappear like this."
"I know," Joohyun said in a whisper. "But there was so much I still wanted to do... things I can't do now."
"I wanted to do a lot of things too... Do... Do you mind telling me some of the things you wanted to do? You don't have to, but it might be nice to share it."
Joohyun stayed silent for a while, deep in thought. She then turned to look Seungwan directly in the eyes.
"I wanted to... go on a trip with my mom... but her star fell, and I can't now. I wanted to go somewhere I could see a sky full of stars."
Joohyun had a smile on her face, but tears rolled down her cheeks, falling on top of the grass beneath the two girls.
"I wanted to... I wanted to... Nevermind that. It's not important."
"Of course it is," Seungwan quietly said.
"I wanted to..." Joohyun started, hesitating for a bit afterwards. "Spend more time with you, Seungwan. Making many memories, preferably good ones."
"I guess we wished for the same thing," Seungwan replied bitterly with a chuckle.
"What about you, Seungwan? What did you want to do?"
"Too many things," Seungwan said with teary eyes. "Things I can't do anymore."
Silence filled the air, neither of the girls having the will or emotional strength to break it. It was a painful silence, but trying to get meaningless words out was just as painful for them, so they didn't speak for a while.
"There's some things that I can still do, I guess..." Seungwan broke the silence.
"Like what?" Joohyun asked.
"Like this," Seungwan replied and leaned forward to gently kiss Joohyun. It was a kiss full of emotions, their lips trembled and tears streamed down the two girls' cheeks.
When they separated, it was hard for the girls not to start sobbing, screaming, but they stopped themselves, wanting to appreciate the moment as much as they could. They wanted to appreciate the short amount of time they had together, because they knew very well that it would be coming to an end soon, and they wouldn't be given notice of it.
Carefully, Seungwan slid her hand over Joohyun's and intertwined their fingers. She squeezed Joohyun's hand as if to tell her that she was there for her until the end, and Joohyun squeezed back with a small smile. They were happy to be together, they were the only thing keeping each other sane, and both of them felt thankful for the other's presence.
"I love you, Joohyun," Seungwan breathed out.
"I... I love you too, Seungwan."
And so, their stars fell.
