The sound of birds chirping could be heard as Sooyoung slowly opened her eyes to the small amout of light that filled the bedroom. She slowly sat up, stretched her arms and rubbed her eyes. After checking what time it was, the girl got up, made her bed and walked towards her window, which was covered by blinds.
Every morning, Sooyoung would open the window and simply observe her surroundings, taking in the details that changed from the day before. One of the reasons she woke up early every day was to listen to the almost completely quiet sounds that required special attentiveness to be heard. To her, it felt like listening to a song written for her, and only her. A special song she had the privilege of listening to. One that she would like to share with someone one day.
That day, however, the song that was waiting was not just for her. It wasn't the same as usual, no, it was as if her privilege had been taken away, but she didn't mind. She had always wanted to share that privilege with someone else and it seemed like that was the day it was going to finally happen.
When Sooyoung opened the window, she closed her eyes and felt the sunlight touch her cheeks. With a satisfied smile, she opened her eyes and, surprisingly, there was a figure on the opposite side of her house. A girl was looking out of her house's window, just like Sooyoung was doing from hers. As the soft light of the morning sun shone on the girl's face, Sooyoung felt her heart beat faster. The girl was beautiful. So beautiful that Sooyoung closed the window and stepped away from it, not being able to handle her feelings at that moment.
The morning of the day after the one during which she saw the beautiful girl, Sooyoung made sure to wake up from her sleep at the same time as the day before — which she did with the help of her trusty alarm clock — and retrace her steps, to open her window at the same time she had done the day before. However, when Sooyoung finally got to the time of looking out of her window, the other girl was not at the same place as the day before.
Sooyoung felt disheartened for a few seconds. She thought that maybe she wouldn't be able to see the girl that day, which filled her heart with sadness. The girl decided to simply do what she did every day, listen to the sounds around her.
After a while of her usual listening, the window in front of Sooyoung slowly opened to reveal the girl she wished to see. Sooyoung looked at her and they locked eyes. They stayed like that for a while and time passed, it passed so slowly it felt like hours to Sooyoung. She would usually hate how slow it was passing, but this was different, it was a new feeling to her. She didn't mind it at all.
A surge of determination hit Sooyoung, and she decided to finally break the eye contact. Much to the disappointment of the other girl — which could be seen by the change of the expression on her face — Sooyoung turned around and went inside her room once again. However, this time it wasn't because of wanting to turn away from any strange feelings.
Sooyoung quickly got a piece of paper and a pen from one of her desk drawers, sat down on her chair and began writing a few words. After she finished writing, she read what was written and smiled to herself, folding the paper into an airplane afterwards.
The words were simple and clear. "I can't help but wonder... what's your name? I'm Sooyoung. Park Sooyoung."
The girl went back to the window, relieved about the fact that the other girl hadn't left her spot, and threw the airplane to the other side. Luckily, it landed inside the girl's house with ease, which kind of surprised Sooyoung.
Sooyoung observed as the girl picked the paper airplane up from the floor and unfolded it, reading its contents afterwards. She went inside her house and after a few minutes, just like Sooyoung had done, threw her own paper airplane to Sooyoung's direction.
When the paper airplane landed inside Sooyoung's bedroom, she picked it up, unfolded it and read what was written on it.
"My name is Seulgi. Kang Seulgi." Sooyoung grinned.
From then on, the two girls would send each other paper airplanes everyday. Most of what they wrote were just questions about each other's life, their likes, their hobbies. They didn't speak out loud and they hadn't asked for each other's numbers either, so they had never heard each other's voice. However, that didn't matter to them. They simply enjoyed observing the other's expressions and trying to understand the feelings they put into every word they carefully wrote.
They put a lot of thought into every sentence, every word they wrote, wanting to convey their feelings as best as possible. Even if one simply asked the other how she was doing, the question was written carefully, as thoughtful as was possible.
On one particularly windy morning, Sooyoung just couldn't resist the urge to send a paper airplane to Seulgi's direction, so that's exactly what she did. However, the airplane flew to the side, not reaching Seulgi's house. She cursed herself for having ignored the wind and, not wanting to lose the message she so carefully wrote, the girl left her house to go pick the paper airplane up.
After running after it for a bit, as the wind kept on making it fly away from her, Sooyoung finally found the paper airplane lying on the ground. With a sigh of relief and a small smile, the girl crouched down and, as she touched it to pick it up, a hand was placed on top of hers. Her eyes wide with surprise, Sooyoung looked up and there Seulgi was, with the most beautiful smile she had ever seen.
