Hannah’s POV:
We later Found out that the Tenton Dam had burst, a Dam that was about eight minutes away. The only thing that had survived was me and Amber’s headsets, though I can’t imagine how.
Team Crafted’s House was less than that. In fact, they had gone to the lake to swim daily. Their house had been demolished. There was just no way of saving it. We stayed at a hotel in the next county.
Amber was impacted most by the flood. She didn’t eat. She didn’t talk. She didn’t Sleep. You could see dark rings around her eyes. Today, a week since the incident, I heard her in the bathroom.
I knocked on the door. “Amber? Are you okay?” I said, my voice cracking. I heard her choke. I opened the door and gasped. There was Amber, looking into the mirror, tears streaming down her face, with a blade in her hand. She had just made three cuts on her right palm.
She stared ahead and dropped the blade. “Amber?! Why would you do that?!” I screamed at her, and she didn’t look away from her reflection. She pointed to her purple phone on the counter. I picked it up and turned it on.
She and Kati had texted. Kati had told her that her parents were missing in the debris of her house. They were most likely not alive. She and her sister were living together now in an apartment complex.
“Oh-Oh Amber,” I said, and I walked up to her and she didn’t move. She sat staring into her reflection. Then she looked down. She pulled out a crumpled note from her pocket and handed it to me.
Those three words made my heart stop.
I can’t talk.
Amber’s POV:
It had been a week now. This morning I received a text from Kati Saying:
Sorry I haven’t Replied. I am depressed and scared right now. My house was also partially destroyed, but I was not there when it happened. Unfortunately my parents were. They have not been found yet. I am with my sister, Raine right now. My parents are most likely not alive.
I dropped my phone. Although it was 7:00 in the morning, I ran. I ran out of the hotel and ran to the appliance store. I bought something I thought I would never see again. I ran back into the hotel silently. I sprinted into the bathroom and tears began streaming from my face as I opened the packaging.
I grabbed my phone and set it down on the counter. I couldn’t do it. Then I tried to ask why to the heavens, and nothing came out. I tried to talk. I couldn’t. I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down ‘I can’t talk.’ on it, in case someone walked in.
I grabbed the razor blade and made a cut.
That was for letting your friends down.
I cut again.
That was for Kati’s parents.
Another cut.
That was for the flood.
Then I heard a knock on the door. “Amber? Are you Okay?” Hannah’s voice drifted in through the wooden door. I choked. She opened the door and I simply stared ahead at my own reflection. She gasped when she saw what I was doing. Her gasp scared me and I dropped the blade.
“Amber?! Why would you do that?!” She yelled at me, and I simply pointed at the violet colored phone on the table. She slowly picked it up and read the text. “Oh-Oh Amber,” she said. She got closer to me. I looked down and pulled the note out of my pocket and handed it to her. Hannah read it and gasped.
“That’s not funny Amber,” She said. She thinks I’m joking. I grabbed the pencil and snatched the paper out of her hands. I wrote, ‘I’m Serious.’ on there and she read it and then she looked into my eyes. Her eyes were filling up with tears. “You can. Think of something happy. Close your eyes.” She said. I obeyed her.
“I miss Kati.” I said in a raspy voice. Hannah hugged me. “I know you do.” She pulled apart. “Tell me if you ever feel that depressed again.” She said and she bent down and picked up the blade. She left the bathroom and I followed her. She went to the trash can and threw them in. “Promise me you will never do that again.” she said.
And I promised her.
A week later Adam called. “I’ll get it!” I called out, running to the phone. “Herro?” I said, and Adam’s voice replied. “Hi, Amber, can you give this to your sister? I need to talk to her.” He said, and I gave her the phone. “Uh huh.” Hannah said, then she said “Really? We would love that!” She then hung up the phone.
“What did he want?” I asked. “Amber, We are moving to California.”
