Peggy's POV
Think you have team spirit? Join us for cheerleader tryouts after school this Friday! May lots of luck and spirit be with you!
My hands trembled as I read every last word on the flyer. I wanted to try out. I wanted it so bad. But every time I thought of myself being on the squad, my mind always wandered back to that humiliating incident in sixth grade. The insults that they had said felt like knives stabbing me with each and every word. My mind was in scrambles, I didn't know whether to try out and risk being ruthlessly teased and humiliated once more, or stay back and let the tryouts happen without me. I just shoved a flyer inside my backpack, resorting to just figuring it out later.
I smiled as I headed towards my friends, lunch tray in hand. My day had gone well so far, minus that small debate (more like war) I had with my mind that morning. They always seemed to make me laugh, especially Lafayette.
"Hey Peggy!" Maria excitedly waved to me, she was clutching a paper in her hand.
I went to sit next to her and saw what she was holding. It was the very same flyer I had picked up that morning.
"Are you trying out for the cheer squad? I know I am! It looks so cool! Are you?" Maria was practically bursting with joy.
Joining the cheer squad was always easy for Maria in middle school. Not only was she an expert gymnast, she was skinny. Lean, not a single ounce of fat on her. She was one of those people who could eat bucketloads of food and not gain a single pound. I knew it was unfair to think envious thoughts of her, but I couldn't help it. I envied her stick frame ever since we were children. She always said nice comments about me, but I knew that I could never be beautiful until I looked like her.
I stuttered for a bit when I answered her question. I never told her about the incident in sixth grade, I knew that if I did, she would seek out with an intention to kill the eight graders. So when I left the tryouts, I had told Maria that I had decided not to join after all.
"I...yeah! Yeah! I'm trying out for the cheer squad," I tried my best to sound as enthusiastic as Maria, but on the inside I was sulking.
All of a sudden, the negative thoughts came speeding back into my brain. You think you have a shot at the cheer squad? Ha! Think again fat ass. Why would they ever accept a pig like you? What the eight graders said to you will be nothing compared to what the cheer squad will do to a pig like you! God, you're such a fatso! Just die! Kill yourself! You don't even matter!
Luckily, a voice stopped the horrid thoughts before they could continue any further.
Lafayette's POV
The first day of high school had gone well so far. All my classes were relatively easy and my teachers all seemed to like me. Except for Mr. Elliot, when I ended up teaching the French Revolution to the class better than him. Hey! It's my home country!
I was just talking with John when I glanced over at Peggy, and saw that something was wrong. She looked like she was on the verge of tears while Maria was blabbing on and on about something.
"Mon ami? Peggy? Are you alright?" I delicately asked her.
Instantly, her eyes looked up. God, I could just get lost in those dark, sweet hazelnut eyes.
"Oh, yeah I'm quite alright," she said, forcing a smile that I could tell was fake.
I scooted closer to her, our legs touching, which I slightly blushed at.
"Peggy, I've known you ever since we were kids. I can tell when you lie," I said, grinning a bit.
She was about to respond when Herc saw us from across the table.
Ooooooo! And just what are you lovebirds up to? Herd smirked at us, drawing the attention of everyone else at the table.
I was put on the spot, I had to think of something quick.
"I was just helping Peggy with a math problem! See!" I frantically shoved my math book in Herc's face.
"Laf, the book's upside down."
I think Maria noticed us, so she quickly said something to strike up a conversation and then winked at me, in which I reddened at. By the time I looked over to continue talking to Peggy, she had already started talking with Maria. I sighed, something was wrong and Peggy would not seem to tell me what is.
