We always say, we want to make the world a better place. But what do we actually do?
Pollute the oceans with plastic ? Take away habitats of other living creatures?
We think by inventing medicine we are going to free the world -our holy world- from all the diseases, but what if we- the human kind -are in fact the only disease that should vanish from the place we call our home.***
I walk down the street. In the light of a lamppost I see something sparkling. My granddaughter grabs my hand and pulls me in the direction of that something.
"Look Look! There is treasure. I found treasure!" I thought about weather to play along or to pop her little bubble of dreams. I decided to tell her the truth. For safety reasons."Hey sweety, listen. I'm very sorry but this isn't something good, okay? You see it's a bottle. Plastic or glass. Garbage. Don't touch it. You can cut yourself and you can get infected."
"But how does it get here? Isn't it also going to hurt the animals?"
"Yes my dear, it could. People nowadays throw away the stuff they don't need anymore without acknowledging what they do with the environment."
I squeeze her hand to encourage her.
"Maybe you could be the next generation to change the world."
She grins from one ear to the other.
I reply with a sad smile.I have never really thought about the things that happen to our world. When I was much younger I didn't care if someone left the wrappings of a chocolate bar lying somewhere. Even if I left rubbish lying somewhere.
My granddaughter wants to go home so we leave this place.
This time I turn around to look back. Something I have never really done before.***
I open my eyes and see everything blue. Softness surrounds me and I let myself float. Everything is just perfect until I see a great shadow that's eating up the sunlight that was able to illuminate the water down here. I look upwards and see plastic. Plastic everywhere. An whole island of the most used material of the human world. The humans from whom I was one of them.
I also most likely took part in building this horrible plastic island in the sea. And now I know what consequences it has. For all of us.
Many dead fish, fish like me, left their lifes here. Because of the pollution.
I swim away as fast as I can and after a long time I get to a beach.
Maybe because I was a human once or just out of instinct.
Something catches my fisheyes.
It's a bag in the water. I want to swim away but then a hand dives into the see and takes the plastic out. And to my surprise I see a grown up girl. A girl like my granddaughter.
And I know that together the world can change.***
~500 word exactly 😂
