Callie's POV

The ride from the juvenile center to Lena's house was quiet. She asked me about Jude, but I just gave her a short answer. I didn't think she really cared to know. She was just probably trying to make conversation. Other than that short conversation, the only noise was the tires rolling on the road and the outside noise of other cars.

Lena pulled up to this nice big house in a quiet residential neighborhood. I was kinda surprised. From the look of the car she drove, it didn't seem like she could afford a house this big. I slowly got out of the car while staring at the house. The front yard was full of nicely cut bushes and a few flowers that were blooming.

Before realizing it, Lena was already at the door. "Callie, come on," she said. I quickly walked up the porch stairs and into the house. Two Hispanic kids were sitting at the kitchen table. "Callie, this is Jesus and Mariana. Guys this is Callie. She will be staying with us for a while," Lena introduced. Jesus was a medium size boy with a pretty small. He gave a pretty smile. Mariana looked like she was wearing exspensive clothes and she just stared at me. I wasn't really suprised. I just ignored it and took a seat at the end of the wooden table that sat in the middle of the kitchen.

"Would you like a snack or something to drink?" Lena asked. "Water would be fine." She nodded and grabbed a cup from the cabinet. I quickly gulped down the water. My mouth had been dry since I got beat up. Lena, Jesus and Mariana all looked at me in suprise. "Sorry," I said. "It's fine. If you want you can get some more," Lena said.

"Actually, can you show me where the bathroom is?" I asked, getting up from the table. "Through this door around the corner on your left," she said.

I went to the bathroom. When I looked at myself in the mirror seeing how bad I looked, I felt a bunch of emotions come over me. I put my head in my hands and started to ball my eyes out. I never imagined my life would end up being like this. I was a former inmate in juvie and I was separated from my brother, who was stuck in a terrible foster home. This wasn't the way life was supposed to be. I was supposed to be wherever Jude was and making sure he was in a safe place. That was my job ever since we were placed in foster care. I couldn't believe I failed him. I looked up at myself in the mirror. Tears steady falling down my face. I wiped them away. You gotta get yourself together, I thought. I splashed my face with some cold water to wipe away the evidence that I had been crying and went back into the kitchen.

When I walked back in the kitchen, another woman was seated at the table looking at the newspaper. She was in a police uniform. I was taken back a little bit. I didn't expect a police officer to be here. What was going on? Was I going back to juvie? The woman looked up from the newspaper and looked at me. "You must be Callie." I was hesistant to nod. "I'm Stef, Lena's partner," Stef said. I relaxed a little more. So Lena is gay, I thought. I never would've thought. "Oh, Lena must not have told you that we are gay," she said. I shook my head. She laughed and said, "Yeah, that usually suprises people." I just stood their silent. "Why don't you take a seat? Make yourself comfortable." I took a seat where I was seated earlier.

"So Lena told me you just were released from juvie," Stef said. I slowly nodded. I didn't know if I should elaborate. "What were you in there for?" I looked down at the wooden grooves of the table trying to figure out the best way to explain myself. I looked back up at her. She was waiting for an answer. "Well, my previous foster father was hitting my little brother and I tried to stop him and he ended up kicking me in the stomach. I got mad about it all and ended up hitting his car with his baseball bat," I said. I didn't know if she believed the story, but that was the truth.

"Where's your brother now?" She asked. I looked back down at the table. "I think he's still at the man's house. Bill hasn't moved him yet." My eyes were starting to water thinking about it. All the time I had spent at juvie and Jude was stuck with the man that only wanted a check.
