Jack stepped aside, so his father could see what was inside the wardrobe.
He stared at the bird in total disbelief.
"I don't know where it came from, but that's a bird, Jack." he said and took a deep breath. "I'm going to ask you again. Where. Is. Your. Sister?"
Jack stayed quiet. Of course, they wouldn't believe him. Why would a little girl end up as a bird out of nowhere? As surreal as it sounded, it was possible. Jack experienced it himself and he knew that something was wrong with him and his sister, and possibly Myron too.
Jack was already going through different scenarios inside his head, about how he and his siblings would escape from their parents. Even though, he was sure that he couldn't see into the future, he had a really bad feeling about all of this.Suddenly, the bird jumped up and then began to change. Myron's eyes shot open and Jack quickly jumped in his father's way, shutting the door by hitting it with his back.
"WHAT THE- what is happening to the bird?!" their father screamed at him and their mother put her hands over her mouth.
But Jack got pushed away from him, and he teared open the door.
Alma sat there, on a pile of clothes, completely human- except for her right arm, wearing her pyjama again. It was a human-sized wing with blue peregrine feathers.
They could hear their mother gasp in shock in the background, dropping something what she had held in her hand.
Their father ran over to a counter and grabbed a burning candle.
"Oh no." Jack thought, knowing what their dad was going to do and immediately picked up Alma, then rushing over to his brother.
"We have to leave, Myron." he said shortly, while his lips were trembling.
The younger brother was shaking, while he watched his father pointing the candle at them and their mother screaming, calling Alma a "witch".
Then their dad began to step towards them, ready to burn them. It was a horrible sight, seeing their parents doing something like this to their own children."NOW!" Jack yelled, and took his brother's arm, running out of the room into the corridor with Alma in his arms.
Before their parents could reach them, he put down Alma and handed her and Myron three jackets, telling them to get out of the house as fast as possible.
Jack managed to get some money out of his parents wallets and then he quickly went over to the door, where Myron and Alma just escaped through.
"STOP!" his father yelled, as he reached the corridor and almost tripped on the carpet. But Jack was only a few seconds from disappearing through the door and flipped him off. Then he stepped outside and slammed the door shut behind him.<—————>
The three ran around a corner at the end of the street and then pressed themselves against the facade of a house. They all put on their jackets and Jack pulled out the money from his trousers' pockets.
"It's enough for three train tickets." he said and looked up, after counting the money in his hands.
Myron's head shot up, after he finished buttoning up his jacket. "You stole money from our parents?! They're going to freak out even more!"
"And that's why we need to get away from here as quick as possible." Jack replied, as if he completed an unfinished sentence. "We need to get to the train station."
Myron sighed. "Well then." Then he took Alma's hand and nodded at Jack.
The three siblings took each other's hands and proceeded to find their way down the streets.
