Natalie

“WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT!?” I screamed at Jordyn

“What the heck was what?” She snapped back.

“Whatever that was going on back there!”

“You know, I could as you the same question.”

“What?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You heard me. I could ask you the same question. What the heck was that?” She sounded so calm, so collected.

“What does that have to do with this, Jordyn!?”

“Because you’re not making any sense!” She yelled in frustration.

“How am I not making any sense?”

“You say you don’t want to compete, but you’re going to go to workout? I don’t see how that’s going to help your case.”

“Jordyn, the competition starts on Sunday! It’s Friday night! IF they won’t let me off I have to be ready.”

“See, this is what I don’t understand. You’re perfectly willing to gear up for competition, but when it actually comes down to it, you’re done! I don’t understand. What? What’s going on with you Natalie?! You’ve never done this before.”

“I just don’t want to compete anymore Jordyn! I still enjoy gymnastics, but I can’t do it! I can’t compete! There’s no drive, Jordyn. I’m done. I’ve had it!” Her expression softened.

“No, no you haven’t, but you have given up and the only explanation is because of the fire. Don’t do this, Natalie. Don’t let your grief swallow you. Don’t back out now.”

“I thought you would love for this to happen Jordyn. You get to compete in all-arounds. Isn’t that what you want?” I asked scathingly.

“Not like this! You’re giving up, Natalie and you’re not even denying it!”

“MY PARENTS JUST DIED JORDYN! I think I have a right to give up!”

“So you are giving up?”

“No, that’s not what I- I just- I- NO!”

“Well, while you figure out what you are doing let me tell you this, your parents wouldn’t want you to give up. They would want you to compete! Not hide away and wallow in your grief!”

“You have no idea what they would want Jordyn! No one will! Because they’re DEAD!”  I stormed out of the room and ran around blindly until I found a bathroom. I sank to the ground and buried my head in my hands, sobbing. I wasn’t there for very long before the door swung open.

“Save it Jordyn.” I tried to snap, but my voice broke.

“It’s not Jordyn.” A, definitely male and British voice, said. I looked up. Sure enough, it was liam.

“I’m sorry. Do you need the bathroom?”

“No. No I’m okay. I came to check on you, actually.” That’s all it took for my tears to flow again. “Shh. It’ll be okay, love.” He said, sitting down behind me and pulling me into his arms. I let him. I needed someone right now.

“Why would she say those things?” I whispered through my tears.

“I don’t know, love, but there must be a reason..”

Liam

I rocked her back and forth. I’m not sure why, but for some reason I had this overwhelming urge to hold her, protect her, and keep her safe. It was hurting me to see her cry and I’m not sure why.
