The door creaked open early in the morning while Andie was still laying in bed. She wasn't asleep but just curled up, staring at the wall. When her mother walked over and sat on the edge of her bed, Kathy could immediately tell she was upset.
"You okay?" Kathy asked her daughter while resting a hand on her shoulder.
"I'm fine," She nodded.
Her mother looked at her for a minute before revealing, "I talked to Chris."
Andie didn't say anything, she just sat up and curled her knees against her chest. With her silence, Kathy decided to continue.
"When Lisa and I went down for breakfast, he was sitting out on the deck. He told us what happened last night," Kathy informed.
"Why?" She asked. "Nothing happened."
"Well then Chris is pretty upset for it being nothing," She returned.
"There was nothing to it! He said he thought we should give a relationship a try and I said we did and it didn't work and that's all there was to it," Andie tried to shrug it off.
Kathy sighed softly but still managed a small smile when she looked up at her, "Oh Andie, I know there is so much more to it than that."
"There isn't anything to it!" She huffed.
"I know you care about him," Kathy looked at her.
Andie sighed while she hugged her knees tightly to her chest. When she looked at her mother, her eyes clouded with tears and her lower lip quivered while she pushed out, "I don't want to feel this way about him.""But why not?" She asked.
"Because it scares me!" Andie cried. "It hurt me so much when he forgot about our date and that was ten years ago and we've only gotten closer now. I just couldn't take it if he did the same thing to me now."
"Andie, give him a second chance," Kathy advised her. "He screwed up but so does everyone. Chris is a good man and he cares about you so much."
"I don't know," She sniffled as tears still cascaded down her cheeks.
Just then, a soft knock rapped on the door. Kathy told the person to come in and the door opened only wide enough for Chris to poke his head in. When she saw him, Kathy patted Andie's knee before giving her a soft smile and leaving the two alone. Once the door was shut, Chris shuffled his hunky frame over to where Andie was still curled up on the bed.
"I'm really sorry," He apologized while shoving his hands in his pockets.
"For what Chris?" She asked, feeling anger bubble inside of her. "Sorry that I said no to what you want?"
"Andie don't even," Chris shook his head.
"Oh you know it's true Chris! You're just upset because you didn't get what you wanted and you always get what you want!" Andie shouted.
"That's not true and you know it!" He yelled right back.
"It is true! And ten years ago you made it obvious you didn't care about my feelings when you forgot about our date and now that you decide for whatever reason that you want a relationship, I'm not going to just walk into it and get hurt again!" She crossed her arms over her chest.
"So you're not even going to give me a chance? You still think of me as that stupid 21 year old kid?" The anger and hurt was evident in his booming voice. "You really think that little of me?"
"Well you obviously have that little respect for my feelings!" Andie countered.
Chris stood there brooding for a moment before he muttered, "Fine." And walked out of the room.
Almost immediately after he slammed the door behind him, Andie grabbed her bag and started stuffing all her clothes inside. In less than a half an hour, Andie had gotten car keys from her mother and was hurrying down the stairs. Luckily with it still being early in the morning, everyone else was asleep but when she walked into the living room to get to the front door, she found just the person she was trying to avoid."You're just going to leave?" Chris asked while getting up to hurry after her.
"Yes," She kept up her brisk pace.
"You're really just going to walk out that door and ignore everything that we could have between us. You're going to ignore how I feel about you?" His eyes searched hers once he grabbed her arm to stop her. "I know you feel the same way about me."
Andie let out a heavy sigh and felt a single tear roll down her cheek before she opened the door and said, "I'm sorry but I don't."
