My eyes flutter open, immediately seeing the harsh, florescent hospital lights. I squint, trying to adjust to my surroundings as a nurse enters the room. "Oh, good! You're awake. How is the shoulder feeling?" she asks with a pleasant smile.
I'm now starting to feel the numbness in it--they must have medicated it enough for them to stitch me up. "It's feeling okay--what about my baby?" I ask, feeling incredibly nervous for her answer. "Well, we ran a few tests and everything seems to be perfectly normal. We wanted to wait until you were awake to run an ultrasound."
Betty knocks on the door and she and Jellybean walk in. "How are you feeling?" Betty asks, coming around to the side of my bed, taking my hand in hers. "I'm alright. I'll be as good as new soon. Did anyone get a hold of FP?"
She nods, "The hospital took care of it. He's on his way back--driving like a madman I might add. He said to tell you he loves you--once you woke up," Betty says with a smile. I can't help but smile also, I can't wait to see him.
The girls step out of the room while I get my ultrasound done. The nurse lifts up my hospital gown, revealing my baby bump. She spreads some gel on it and presses the wand down, "Okay, let's get a heartbeat." I nod, holding my breath, praying that there's still a heartbeat.
A moment later a thumping noise comes clearly across the monitor. I let out a sigh of relief and the nurse smiles. "A great sound, huh?" I wipe my tears away and nod. She continues to check the monitor, "Well Alice, everything looks perfectly normal. You're little girl is just fine."
I feel my breathe catch in my throat--did she just say little girl? She notices my confused expression and covers her mouth with her hands, "Oh my god! Did you not know?! I'm so sorry!" A smile spreads across my face, "It's--it's a girl?" She nods, "Yes--oh, I'm so sorry for spoiling it," the nurse apologizes again.
I shake my head, "No--no. It's fine. It's perfect," I say, the smile still plastered across my face. She nods, wiping the gel off of my belly. "We contacted your regular doctor and told him what happened. He wants to see you sometime this week--just to check everything over again."
I smile, "Thank you. I'll make an appointment--um, can you tell my girls to come in here?" She nods, exiting the room. A few moments later Betty and Jellybean come back in the room, sitting on each side of my bed, "I take it from your smile, everything is okay?!" Betty asks, a smile of her own appearing across her face.
"It's more than okay--everything's perfect," I rub my belly gently, feeling my baby girl kick. I look up at the girls, "Well...are you two ready to have a little sister?" I smile through happy tears. Betty's jaw drops and Jellybean covers her mouth, squealing in excitement. "It's a girl?!" Betty exclaims, gently hugging me. I kiss her forehead, "Yes, it's a girl!" Jellybean wraps her arms around me as well, unable to contain her excitement, "I get a little sister! I get a little sister!" I boop her nose and kiss her forehead too.
"Don't tell your dad," I ask her, "I want to surprise FP when he gets here," I tell Betty. Both of the girls nod. Betty reaches her hand to mine, her expression turning serious, "I was so scared mom. You were so brave in there. I--I can't believe it." I stroke her hair gently, "I was scared too. I would never have forgiven myself if something would have happened to you girls. I couldn't have done it without both of you. We were quite a team in there."
They both crack little smiles. "You were like Wonder Woman," Jellybean comments. I laugh, tucking some stray hairs behind her ear. "I love you girls." They rest their heads on my chest, "We love you--a lot," Betty says softly.
I hear footsteps down the hall and then someone enters the room, "Al!" FP rushes over to us, wrapping his arms over the three of us, "Thank God you're all okay," he says, the tears pouring down his cheeks. I find his lips and kiss him passionately, so grateful for this reunion. He gently strokes my cheek and then wraps Jellybean in his arms. "I love you baby," he says stroking her hair, "I heard you were so brave."
