It was ready.

Alex and Carmen could be separated.

Both were excited. Carmen wouldn't have to fight for her body, and Alex would be its own person.

Cisco and Caitlin were worried. When Ronnie and Stein had separated, it had caused a nuclear explosion. What would happen when they separated?

Barry and Len didn't know what would happen, but since they didn't seem to have parents, they were going to go home with them. Or so they hoped.

Alex was nervous. It was the only reason Carmen couldn't remember. If she did... Carmen would hate herself.

But Alex couldn't keep doing this. It couldn't keep being a protector, a defender.

Alex had named itself Alex because if one looked it up, Alex meant defender. That's what it was, right? Carmen's defender.

But Alex couldn't protect her from everything.

Eventually, Carmen would remember. She would have the support of Barry and Len, of JJ and Lily, of Cisco and Caitlin.

But Alex couldn't be there. Not anymore. It needed to get away, to live a life of its own.

JJ and Lily didn't understand what was happening, but they were hoping they could be there to comfort them in the aftermath.

So Carmen put on the Quantum Splicer, and they turned it on.

...

Alex had never felt that much pain in its life.

It burned so much, but it felt cold. It seemed like it would never go away, almost like it was a part of it.

Yet it did.

When it opened her eyes, it was still cold.

It looked up into the eyes of Len.

"Did it work?" she whispered hoarsely.

Len nodded, speechless. Then he pointed behind her.

There was her body, or what had been. It was Carmen. She was staring at Alex with the same look that Alex was looking at her.

"It worked," she whispered in the same hoarse voice. "It really worked."

They jumped up, Alex having a little more trouble, and hugged.

They stayed that way for a while, just holding each other until Len and Barry pulled them apart.

After spending years together, Carmen wanted to spend a little time apart. Alex could respect that. That didn't mean it had to like it, though.

It sat in Len's room by itself. When it had gone to the bathroom, it couldn't help but stare at its complexion.

It was now Asian with brown eyes. It stared at the way its lips moved to a smirk, then a frown, then a real smile.

It was its own person.

It didn't have to protect Carmen. It could live its own life.

Suddenly, a noise made itself known. Alex whirled around, but it wasn't anger she felt. It was self-preservation.

"Are you Khalida?" a girl asked. She had long, red hair, currently tied in a ponytail. Alex would call her Flame.

Alex shook her head. She didn't feel like talking. Not to this stranger.

Another girl near her whispered something in her ear. Flame nodded.

"Are you Alex?"

Alex nodded, a question on its features. It didn't speak aloud, just letting it hang in the air.

"Oh, right. I forgot."

Alex raised an eyebrow, but the girl beside Flame spoke again.

"I'm Kate! We're here to give you the adventure of a lifetime. You in?"

Alex stared at them. These people didn't make sense, but then again, when did anything in life? Alex didn't have anything here. Her mission with Carmen was over. She didn't care about those other weirdos.

She nodded with a thumbs up.

A third girl ran up to her and wrapped tight arms around her.

"Well, I'll whisk you away, my queen."

And then they were gone, Alex leaving its old life behind in favor of a new, exciting one.

It didn't know what would happen. But then again, one cruise had changed its whole life.

Who's to say this new adventure wouldn't?

...

Note: I'm so sorry this took so long, and it was so short! But, tell me that wasn't a good ending.

Hope you enjoyed!

Coldflash out! ;)
