The family was all together, back at Luisa’s grandmother’s house and packing things back into Luisa’s mum’s red golf. There was a heavy silence. Luisa had exchanged only a few words with her grandmother who seemed to have retreated into herself.
“It’s difficult for her Luisa… brings back memories.” said her Mum, as Luisa put a box in the back of the car.
Hugh was there to say good-bye. He hugged Luisa hard and wiped a tear from his eye.
“Look after yourself pet, and I’ll call yeh’, if you know, Gratten comes back here,” he thumbs the abbey grounds.
Luisa’s eyes widened a little. “Oh don’t, lets not bother with that Uncle, I don’t want to upset Grandmother any more than, umm, I already have.”
“Well we will see,” Hugh gave her a wink and Luisa smiled feebly back.
Oh great.
Her Grandmother wouldn’t come down to say goodbye, but Luisa saw her pale face spying out the top window as they left. The red golf bumped its way down the hill, the house and abbey got smaller and smaller. Max pulled out his toys. “Mother may I pay wid’ my toys please?”
Luisa’s Mum started, “Of course you can darling… you don’t have to ask!”
“Grandmavar made me ask,” Max said quietly. The car made its way through country roads, before reaching the M4.
Back to London they went.
