[ ONE. ]
when i was six years old, i had a friend that used to come to this playground every single week.
he was shorter than me, and he had dark hair.
for some reason he would always walk up to people and ask to play tag, but the older kids would always laugh him off, and the other kids weren't allowed to talk to strangers.
but he always skipped over me—the girl sitting at the swings, who needed someone to play with just as much as he did.
one day, i finally walked over to him and asked if we could play a game; it took a lot of courage to simply walk up to him, much less say anything.
"hi, i need someone to play freeze tag with...do you want to join?"
"who else is playing?" he asked, a little unsure.
"just me, so far..."
"no older kids?"
"never."
"good! they're mean!"
"i know right," i tapped his shoulder, "tag, you're it!"
"you have three seconds to run!"
one.
i turned on my heels and began to run.
two.
i took off for about as long as my legs would let me.
three.
"blue is our base! you can't touch me if i'm touching blue!"
thankfully, there was a lot of blue around me. that way i would easily win the game.
i tried to not touch the blue ladders on the playground sets until he was nearby.
"na na na na na, you can't catch me!" i sang to make fun of him.
"i know where you are!" he stomped through the playground set while i hid under it.
"i'm right here, tiny! i'm calling you that now!" i laughed at him.
"i'm not tiny," he ran around and tried to look for me, "if i'm tiny, then..."
he finally found me; i was at the bottom of the ladder, he was at the top.
"...then your hair looks like a mushroom!" he finished.
"well, whatever you say, tiny boy!"
"back at you, mushroom!"
he jumped to the bottom of the ladder and i grabbed onto the rungs.
"haha! i win!" i taunted jokingly.
"fine," he pouted, "i'll get you later!"
