I stopped walking as i heard the sound of laughter coming from the locker room, I knew several of my colleagues would still be in there changing out of their uniforms to head home after their long days.
Most days laughter wouldn't have stopped me from my work, but today the laughter was anything but light hearted. The voices I heard today were laced with malice and unspoken taunts.
I stood outside of the door, waiting for a queue to go in and stop what was happening. Finally I heard it, the faint sound of protesting, crying. And the sound of a voice, "Take a look at the fresh meat cowering on the floor, ladies!"
I flung the door open, my eyes immediately locked on the figure of a man on the ground, his clothes and uniform in a state of disarray from the grip one of my officers had on the clothing.
The officer that stood over the man stood up to face me. "Alexis.! I-I mean.. Captain.. I wasn't doing anything!" She stuttered as she watched me, my expression cold and hard towards her.
"I want your badge and gun on my desk-"
"That isn't fair.!" Her voice cut me off as she protested my orders, the other officers around her shifting uncomfortably. My eyes shifted to each of the women in the room, daring them to speak up in defense of the woman.
"Badge and gun on my desk."
"But Alexis-"
"Now.!"
My anger had gotten the best of me as I stomped towards the woman, grabbing the collar of her uniform and yanking her close to me, her toes barely touching the floor as I held her up.
"You think the way you're treating the new recruits is acceptable!? I see the way you look at them. I see how you and your group mocksand harass them. Is that how an officer of the law behaves?"
When she failed to respond my anger turned to rage. "Is it!?"
Releasing my grip on her uniform I watched as the officer fell onto the floor, her face paled as tears welled in her eyes. "N-no Captain.. that isn't how an officer should behave... I apologize. Sincerely."
Turning towards the man I offered him my hand, helping him up off of the floor after he took it. A soft 'thank you' fell from his lips as he rearranged his uniform and made it look presentable. I nodded, unsure of how to respond.
I gave the women around me one last warning glance as I turned to lead the man from the room. "Even the fresh meat needs a proper chance at survival."
