Thankfully, Keith gets us to the hospital in time. Although he's gonna have hella tickets to pay for running so many red lights. He rushed me into the hospital in the wheelchair, going straight to the front desk.
"Excuse me." He said, grabbing the lady's attention.
"Mr. Keith Powers," she responded with a flirty smile.
"Yes, that's me. I need-"
"What a handsome piece of God's work standing before me. Ryan is BLESSED to have a butterscotch snack like you." She interrupted and bit her lip.
Keith looked at her crazy and I rolled my eyes out of frustration. "I'M HAVING A BABY HERE!"
"I need a room because my friend's wife is in labor right now," he hurriedly said. "And a cast for my hand because I'm pretty sure she broke it."
Soon, we got a room and I stopped feeling contractions. I started to worry and was scared that I had a miscarriage. The doctor checked my stomach for my baby's heartbeat. He was still alive and fine.
"You're just 6 cm dilated, Mrs. Smith. And your baby went back up the birth canal. Seems like somebody's not ready to make his debut yet," Dr. Stancil said.
"Broke my hand for nothing," Keith muttered and rubbed his hand.
"I only popped it. You had a bone out of place anyway," I chuckled.
"I'll be back after she gives you your epidural," Dr. Stancil said before leaving as the nurse walked in.
"Are you ready?" The nurse asked as she prepared to give me the epidural.
I nodded quickly. "Yes! Ready to get this baby out!"
She laughed and looked at Keith. "You must be the father?"
"No no no nooo," he responded. Then, Algee came running into the room with sweat covering his forehead.
"But he is." Keith said, pointing to Algee.
"Did I make it? Are you okay? Is he here? Where is he? Where's our baby?!" Algee panicked.
I grabbed his hands, calming him down. "Baby, slow down. Breathe. Do the exercises we learned."
I felt his breathing slow down as he did one of the breathing techniques we learned in some parenting classes. "I'm not fully dilated and the baby went back inside. He doesn't want to come out yet," I explained.
"He's already stubborn. Just like me," he chuckled.
The nurse gave me the epidural and it took no time for it to start working on me. The contractions started back, but stronger and closer this time. My back was hurting and I felt like throwing up.
Twenty minutes passed by and this baby still wasn't trying to come out. Ryan, Keith, my dad, and my father-in-law were in the waiting room. My mom and Algee's mom were in the room with us, but someone was missing.
"Mom, can you please call Tasha again? I know she wouldn't miss this. I just know it." I said.
"Okay. Just one more time." My mom said and went out the room to make the call. I haven't heard from my sister since earlier when she was upset. She was on her way to my house, so I know she would've been at this hospital by now.
Algee rubbed my hand and stomach as he stood next to me. "It's gonna be okay, baby. She might be stuck in that crazy LA traffic. Bobbin' and weavin' through the lanes like SKRT SKRRRT!" He made the little noise, making me laugh.
He smiled and continued. "I know one thing for sure is that she's not gonna miss our lil man coming into the world. He'll be here soon."
At that moment, I felt the baby starting to slide down. "More like now cuz he's coming!" I yelled.
Algee's eyes rapidly shot open and he ran to the door. "DOCTOR, NURSE, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY! MY BABY IS COMING!" He yelled out of the room. My mom, Dr. Stancil, and about three nurses dashed into the room.
"Mrs. Smith, will you please place your legs on the stirrups for me?" Dr. Stancil asked. My mom and Algee helped me put my legs up, so she can check how far I've dilated by now.
"Oh my God, he's crowning!" She said in shock. "Get ready to push."
They all prepared their equipment as I braced myself for this moment. I began to push as Dr. Stancil counted to ten.
"Damn, I didn't know it could get so...... wide." Algee said, amazed.
"Shut up and just hold my hand, you biscuit & gravy eating motherfucker!" I screamed at him in pain. I pushed two more times and....
"Here he is!" Dr. Stancil announced, holding our crying baby boy. "Come cut the umbilical cord, Mr. Smith!"
One of the nurses handed Algee the scissors and Dr. Stancil showed him where to cut as he happily did it. She handed another nurse our baby before proceeding to help me push out the placenta. After our baby was cleaned up and checked, the nurse handed him to me.
"Here's your bundle of joy," the nurse smiled.
"Thank you," I said as Algee and I smiled back. We glanced at our newborn in awe. Brown eyes, head full of hair, and small. Just like his daddy.
I looked at Algee to see tears coming out of his eyes. "Terrence Lashun Smith," he said. "You finally made your debut."
My dad suddenly walks into the room in a slow pace. "Hey little princess," he said to me. "Y'all alright in here?"
Something was going on and I knew it. I could see it in my dad's smile, covering his nervousness.
"Dad, what's wrong?" I came out and asked.
"Nothing, princess. I wanted to check on y'all and my grandbaby."
"Don't lie to me, dad. Please."
He sighed a little. ".......it's Tasha."
