I sighed, sitting down in the grass as I checked the time on my phone. The 4:30 bus was always late because of rush hour traffic, which sucked considering my last class of the day ended at 4 and I had a long wait anyway. As I sent my best friend another text, I felt someone standing over me and looked up to see who it was.
"Hey," Jimin greeted with a smooth smile and a wave.
"Oh, hi," I responded, squinting at the brightness of the sky. "Your hair's different. Did you do something to it?"
"I just pushed it out of my face," he confirmed. "It's been falling in my eyes lately and it annoys me."
"I like it like that. It makes you look more mature."
"Thanks."
Before the bus finally arrived, coming to a screeching stop with its squeaky breaks, Jimin held out both of his hands to help me to my feet so we could get closer to the stop and make it onto the bus before it could fill up. The doors opened and a stream of students flowed out before the ones crowding around the entrance could get on.
I held onto Jimin's hand so I wouldn't lose him as I led him onto the bus amidst the minor chaos. We went up to the second floor and I pulled him into an empty seat, letting go of his hand finally to set my backpack on the floor between my legs as I sat down.
When I turned to talk to him, he was looking down so I couldn't see his face.
"Jiminie?" I leaned forward in attempt to get a glimpse of his pretty features. "You good?"
"Yeah," he replied, nodding, but turning away slightly.
"Why are you hiding from me?"
"Because I'm embarrassed that holding your hand made me so flustered."
When I realised what he had said, I became aware of the beating in my chest. I shut up and sat back in my seat, trying to think of what to say in response to something like that. Nothing witty or funny or flirty was coming to mind, so I just awkwardly let the silence last longer than I wanted it to while the rest of the bus filled up with college students.
"I can't wait to go home," I sighed, leaning my head back and closing my eyes after ultimately deciding to just let his comment go.
"You say that every time I see you, without fail," he told me with a small laugh, finally sparing a glance in my direction. "Your house must be a really good place."
"Oh, for sure. It's definitely the best place on Earth," I replied sarcastically. "I just like to be able to introvert for long periods of time and my bed is my favourite place to do that."
"I could make a joke about wanting to be in your bed right now, but I'm gonna spare you."
"Jimin, you pervert," I scolded, opening my eyes and shoving his shoulder playfully.
"I'm sorry. I'm sure your bed is an amazing safe space for you to hide from the world and think about things that make you happy instead of suffering at school all day," he corrected himself.
I nodded, pleased with his statement, as he ruffled my hair playfully in attempt to bother me. However, I was used to the gesture thanks to my best friend who always did the same thing when we were together.
As the bus started up and began to drive away from the bus stop, I slouched down in my seat and leaned closer to the window, crossing my arms over my chest. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to not focus on all the homework I still had to do before the weekend.
