"Even the most beautiful roses have thorns."

MAYA

Dear S.B,
I still haven't figured out how this diary ended up on the front porch of my new house a few days ago. I think the more specific question is, who left it there?

This is the first time I'm writing after I found it. So, what's new?  Mom's funeral is next week. John's in prison. Mia is super sweet. Even though he's trying his best to not show it, dad is heartbroken over what John had been doing to me the past two years. Plus, we haven't really talked about why I did what I did.

Oh, and I'm alive.

"Good morning." Dad's voice from the doorstep made me look up from my diary and meet his gaze.

"Good morning," I said, offering him a small smile of my own.

He was leaned against the door with his arms folded across his chest. A small and soft smile was stitched on his lips.

"How are you feeling?"

"I'm okay."

"I wanted to talk to you about something," he said, walking in and sitting down in front of me on my bed.

I nodded and he continued. "Mia and I've decided that you're going start seeing a psychologist and having small sessions with the school counselor once you return to  school."

"Dad, I don't-" I began, but he cut me off immediately.

"-Maya, we really want you to get better."

"Sitting down in a room and talking to a stranger will not make me better," I argued.

"Then tell me, what I can do? How can I make you better? How can I stop you from doing what you did, again?" He questioned, worriedly.

"I just...," I trailed off and sighed.

Dad placed his hand over mine. "Listen, I know this is hard for you. Especially opening up to me after you've kept all of your thoughts and feelings inside of you for so long. But I really want to help you. You're my daughter. My star. I can't lose you again. I refuse to let that happen."

For a moment, I sat in silence. Then my gaze stopped on my diary in my lap. I picked it up and gave it to him.

"Can you read this?"
