MAYA

Everything was turning out well. Bree and Alec were pumping air from their lungs into the colorful balloons together while Kyle had put Faith on her shoulders so she could easily hang the sparkly decorations all over the living room. The place was looking great. Hopefully, Cayden would love it. Fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, Amelia and I were sitting in the kitchen together and decorating the cupcakes she had baked with soft snowy white frosting.

"So how are you doing health-wise after...everything? Physically and mentally." She looked at me with genuine empathy in her eyes.

I'm okay. That's what I wanted to say, but that answer was so overrated when it came to Maya Greene. That's all I really said, but I had so much more locked inside of me. I wanted to say all of that because I was slowly learning that if I said more, the listener wasn't going to run away.

When she noticed I didn't really know how to answer that, she smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry. Just say anything just the way you want to. My husband is a therapist. He has taught me how to be a good listener."

Admittedly, I didn't know much about Cayden's parents. But I guess that also counted for every other kid's parents who lived in the average size of the town. I didn't grow up on this side. I only knew what the parents of the rich kids did for a living. Honestly, I like the adults on the average side more. I liked dad more. I liked Mia more. I liked Mr. Standall more. I liked Kyle and Amelia more. They cared and they were curious. The rich kids' parents either left their kids spoiled or expected perfection from them.

She looked rather pleased with herself and I chuckled before nodding. "Okay. Physically, the first couple of weeks after I woke up from my coma were rough, but even though I still sometimes get pains and get tired easily, I'm getting better every day."

"That's good. You should be glad you didn't wake up completely paralyzed. The fall was immensely dangerous. You were lucky who got treated by some of the best doctors in the world."

Lucky, huh? If I was the same Maya Greene back when I woke up, I wouldn't call it luck. I would call it a mistake made by the universe for taking its time on me. Me, a horrible monster of all the beautiful people in the world.

"I guess I have to thank my mom for that," I whispered, brief pain cutting through my chest.

To my surprise, Amelia looked at me like she understood my pain perfectly well. It was then I remembered Cayden's brother. Amelia's second son.
