"Today my forest is dark. The trees are sad and all the butterflies have broken wings."
MAYA
Thursday morning was the third morning I took my books out of my locker alone. Cayden and I usually did it together.
I hadn't seen him since Monday evening when he came over to my house with Alec for dinner. He texted me the morning after and told me he wouldn't be coming to school for a few days as he wasn't feeling well. I assumed his mental health must've worsened.
"No Cay-Cay today either?" Bree approached my locker, dressed in white jeans and a black and white striped sweater while her hair was pulled into a messy bun that turned out more flawless-looking instead.
"Nope. I'll text him later to see how's he doing," I said, closing the locker before we started heading towards Mr. Standall's office.
"Did you ever talk about what you two are to each other now?" Bree asked.
I shook my head. "No. I wanted to talk about it at my house on Monday, but you saw that he wasn't feeling well. Plus, I figured I shouldn't pry him about that over text messages when he should focus on his mental health."
"You're right. His health is more important right now."
Bree and I entered Mr. Standall's office where the circle of chairs was already formed. Three of the chairs were taken by Owen who smiled and waved at us, Heaven who instantly darted her gaze down in her lap the second she spotted us, and Mr. Standall himself who smiled kindly at us.
Bree and I sat down next to each other on two of the four remaining chairs in the circle.
"Nathan should be here soon and Cayden...," Mr. Standall trailed off when he spotted Nathan walk into the room.
Nathan strode inside, wearing blue designer jeans and a white t-shirt with his varsity team jacket over it. His soft blonde hair was pushed back and his deep blue eyes were gleaming of so much empty happiness that it caused a brief pain in my chest. He didn't need to go through that. He didn't need to carry that emptiness. Despite everything, he didn't deserve that. Nobody did.
All of a sudden, another figure walked in with the hood of his dark blue hoodie pulled over his head, raven hair disheveled across his forehead and eyes, leaving his face beneath a dark shadow. My heart dropped when my gaze caught his poorly bandages hands. His fingertips were a mix of an aching red and purple shade.
Cayden
Stunned, my jaw slightly dropped and Bree's brows pinched together in confusion.
