The water became frigid as Marinette continued to swim towards the ocean floor. Her hair, loose from its elastic prison, scattered and flowed along with the current.

All she could think about was Adrien; his eyes, his face, his smile— and how she didn't want to leave him for what seemed like the millionth time. Stupid fairytales, why couldn't the prince and princess stay just stay together?

The swim back was much easier. But, to be fair, she wasn't carrying an eighteen year old cat-boy this time around.

Eventually the underwater castle came into view; its colorful towers and sandcastle-esque architecture stood out like a sore thumb.

As she got closer, she tried to make up an excuse for her absence, however, Marinette's train of thought broke when her name was suddenly called out by a female voice.

"Mari!" Alya squealed after spotting the young woman from the courtyard. "Father sent guards to search for you! Where did you swim off too?" The brunette quickly swam forward and wrapped her arms around the blunette. "You had us so worried."

"I'm sorry," Marinette mumbled, not quite sure how to react.

"Naive child," Alya tussled her fingers within Marinette's dark blue hair. "Don't disappear even again. After Mother— just don't, okay?"

Marinette frowned, feeling guilty. According to the story of the Little Mermaid, the Queen was killed by ruthless pirates; remorse filled the pit of her stomach.

"I know, I wasn't thinking," she sadly muttered into Alya's shoulder.

"You should go see father," Alya weakly smiled. "He won't be happy, but it's not like he'll lock you away. Just apologize quick and we'll hope for the best."

"I see," Marinette agreed. "Thanks, Alya."

She bid goodbye to her 'sister' and made her way towards the throne room. Conversing with Alya like that made her miss the outside world terribly. What she would give to talk to her best friend again.

As she swam through a coral hallway, a risky idea sprout in her head. Was it possible to just skip to the part where she became human? That would save a record amount of time. After weighing her options, the mermaid decided to pay the Sea Witch a visit earlier than planned.

Cautiously, Marinette successfully avoided all of the castle guards and made her way out of the castle. She was a good distance away from the undersea structure when a sudden snarky voice made the blunette jump.
