Chapter 4

Christa's POV

119 Days Before

It's been a little over a month since Ymir took me on that date. Actually, it was probably the best night of my life. I had all the pictures we took were pinned above my bed.

There were a few new ones up there too. Like one I took on the night I invited Ymir over to meet my grandma.

They were sitting on the porch, smiling. Ymir was laughing at a story my grandma was telling when I took the picture.

It was five days until my 21st birthday. I kept telling Ymir I didn't want anything special planned, but she kept insisting she had ideas. I'm pretty sure my grandma is in on it and everything. My phone buzzed and Ymir's name was displayed across the screen.

I'll be there in twenty minutes. Did you pack the stuff I asked?

Even though I had no idea where we were going, I packed what Ymir asked me to. Enough clothes to last me a week, toiletries, pajamas, etc. All that and my Polaroid camera, and the small square box my grandma gave me. Ymir told me not to open it until we got to our destination.

There was a knock at the door and I knew it was Ymir. I grabbed my suitcase and waddled down the stairs to be greeted by the sight of Ymir hold my grandma tight in an embrace. Grams whispered something in Ymir's ear and they both laughed.

"Hey, beautiful." Ymir said when she saw me come down the stairs. She slid her arm across my upper back.

"You really should get going. You have a long drive ahead of you." she opened the door. I walked over and hugged her.

"I love you Christa. Happy birthday." she patted Ymir's shoulder again and pushed us out of the house. Ymir opened the car door for me and put my luggage in the trunk.

"So, are you going to tell me where we're going?" I asked.

"All in good time, dearest Christa." she said with a fake British accent. "We actually do have a really long drive."

"Like, how long of a drive is this? And I still want to know where we're going." I asked, hoping to get some clues as to where we were going.  She glanced at me with a smug look.

        "You really want to know?"

        "Of course."

"But then it would ruin the surprise." she whined.

"Okay, then how long is the drive to said surprise?"

"Hm, maybe forty hours. More or less." she shrugged.

"No. No, you're not serious! Ymir, tell me you're joking!" I smacked her arm. She laughed and shrugged again.

        "I'm not joking."

"A hug would have been enough! You don't have to drive across the country for me!" I yelled.

"It's your 21st birthday, and you don't expect me to plan something extravagant for you? You may not know this, but I happen to be pretty good at planning dates." she did have a pretty good point.

"That still doesn't mean you should drive for two days straight!"

"Hey, I'll let you drive too." I rolled my eyes and she laughed. "Trust me, it will be 100 percent worth the drive. You brought your camera, right?" I nodded and pointed to the backseat.

"It's in my bag. I brought extra film too."

---

Six hours in, we had to stop for gas again. Ymir filled the tank, and I leaned out of the open window.

"I would still feel better if I knew where we were going." I mentioned for the 80th time this hour. Ymir finished filling the tank, and opened the door to let me out of the car.

"We're here, why not stock up on road food." she said, holding the door open for me. Ymir went straight to the Funions and grabbed two bags. I raided the donuts and caught up to Ymir grabbing some sodas.

"I really wish you'd tell me. I like knowing things." I said. She pulled the fridge door open.

"I'm not telling you and that's that. You're just going to have to wait until we get ther-" I pulled her shirt collar down, and sent her lips crashing into mine. I held her there for a while before releasing her. She immediately hugged me.

"Vegas." she whispered in my ear.

"Sorry what was that? I couldn't hear you."

        "I'm taking you to Vegas."
