Chapter 6
114 Days Before
Christa's POV
Three days ago, Ymir and I got to Las Vegas after a fifty hour drive.
Today was my birthday. Ymir poked my shoulder to wake me up.
"Good morning, birthday girl." I rolled over in our bed. Ymir pushed the package my grandma gave me under my arm.
"Time to open it." she gave it a final nudge before I took it from her hands. I pulled back the green paper around the box and lifted the lid off.
"Oh my god, are you kidding me?" I lifted up the small object contained in the box. A debit card.
"Yep. When I told your grandma about my idea for this trip, she was all aboard, just worried you wouldn't have enough money, so she got you this card. There's about $250 on it too." I threw my arms around her neck.
'Thank you. And I'll have to thank Grams when we get back too."
"You in the mood for breakfast?" she pushed off the bed and stood up.
"Yeah, sure. Just let me get dressed first."
~~
We ate at some breakfast place off the strip. It was really good. I had pancakes and Ymir got a breakfast burrito.
'What should we see first?" she asked as we drove back. "I hear this one hotel has a roller coaster. Just like our first date." she laughed.
"You sentimental loser." I said playfully. She hit my arm. "Sounds great."
~~
The line was unimaginably long, as expected for a tourist trap like this. There were also a lot of screaming kids. The ride was fun, though.
I've never heard anyone scream like Ymir did. When we went upside down, she screamed louder than the kids in the car behind us. We got pizza at the same hotel with the roller coaster after that..
It was loud and smelled like cigarette smoke everywhere, but I got used to it.
"Hey, we've been in Vegas for three days, and you know where we still haven't gone?" Ymir asked me, her mouth stuffed full of pizza.
"Where?"
"The M&M Factory." she managed to fit even more pizza in her mouth.
"Do you have a tourist trap fetish or something?" she laughed and had to cover her mouth to avoid spewing pizza all over me.
"I guess I do." she said, finally swallowing her food.
"I'm in, though. You ready?" she nodded and we threw out our trash. The streets were extremely crowded, so she held onto my wrist the whole time.
~~
The store had several levels to it. The first level was pure M&M's merchandise and Las Vegas souvenirs.
"It's a little ridiculous that a candy could have this many official mugs and crap." Ymir told me on the escalator to the next floor. Only the top floor actually had candy.
They had a huge wall of self-serve M&M's. Ymir and I split a bag of red candies.
~~
"Okay, princess, ready for your first legal drink." Ymir sat me down at a bar off the strip. It was still crowded as hell. There was no where that it could just be the two of us here.
"I love how you assume I've had alcohol before." I leaned into her arm.
"Come on, who hasn't?" she ordered for us. I couldn't help but notice the sky in the window behind Ymir. It was a pretty dark purple. I dug around in my bag for my camera.
"You know, I don't think we've ever been anywhere that you didn't bring that camera." she pointed out as I pulled the lens.
"At least smile." Ymir smirked and I took a photo. She grabbed the photo-and the camera- before I got to them.
"Can I take a picture of you?" she asked and I nodded. She aimed it and I smiled for her.
"I love you, you know?" blood rushed to my face and she clicked the shutter. The bartender slid our drinks across the counter. Ymir got us straight shots of vodka.
"Bottoms up." she clinked her glass against mine and downed the whole thing. I brought my glass to my lips and filled my mouth with the liquid. It stung going down my throat.
"What do you think?" Ymir handed me back my camera and started shaking three photos.
"It's okay, I guess."
"You want another?"
"Of course." she slid me the photos she took. The first was the one I took of her, and the second of me smiling like an idiot, my cheeks bright red. The third was of my with the shot glass to my mouth, my eyes shut tight.
~~
Ymir got drunk. I drew the line when she tried to dance with a stranger. I only had a few shots, so I drove us home. She practically fell asleep before she hit the bed. I put on my pajamas and climbed in next to her.
"Goodnight, my drunken angel."
