***Kaleigh's POV***

I woke in the middle of the night from yet another nightmare. My sleep had taken me back to that horrible day when my father and I were on our way back to our house from the movies.

***FLASHBACK***

"Dad, turn up the radio! It's our song!"

My Girl was playing on the oldies station and my Dad began singing to me like he had so many times before.

While we were entrapped by the music, we didn't realize the stopped traffic in front of us. In what was only 3 seconds, but seemed like an eternity, our car managed to become sandwiched between the back of a semi and an SUV behind us.

Before blacking out, I caught a glimpse of my Dad mouthing the words "I love you", before fading away.

***END OF FLASHBACK***

I began taking deep breaths to calm myself down. It wasn't fair that I was the one to survive and my Dad gone from his own family. But this is just how it was, and I knew from that day on that it was my responsibility to take care of my family.

It has been 6 months since that day, and my Mom still hasn't accepted it. She seems to be in a trance these days. There's always a drink in her hand. She hasn't been herself since Dad's funeral. Kaden took the event incredibly hard. She's out really late on school nights, and I can't help but stay up worried until she gets home. This is the role I've taken on.

I have a boyfriend, Jake. We started dating our freshman year and we're now in the middle of our junior year. We've always gotten along, but since the accident, he hasn't really understood what I've been going through.

Kaden and I got in the car and were on our way to the mall. As we were backing out of the drive way, we noticed two shirtless guys playing basketball next door.

"Kaden, look! Someone finally bought the neighbor's house!"

"Kaleigh, stop the car! They're actually really cute!" My sister shouted.

"Aww, my little sister has a crush! How sweet!"

"Shut up, Kaleigh. You know you were making googly eyes to that tall one."

We thought we would greet the new boys and welcome them to the neighborhood. As we exited the car I couldn't help but melt inside when I saw how blue their eyes were, and I knew they were affecting Kaden twice as much.

"Hey y'all! New to North Carolina?" I asked. Which I unintentionally sounded over-southern.

"Uhm-m, h-hey, " stuttered the tall one (that I had my eyes on).

"Look, Nash, I know they're pretty but you don't have to stutter," said the shorter one.

The boy that was apparently called Nash blushed.

"We actually just moved from across town. We start school at Davidson Day next week. I'm Hayes by the way. And this is my brother Nash."

"Oh, we got to Davidson Day! I'm Kaleigh. This is my younger sister-"

"I REMEMBER YOU NOW! You're the douche I beat at state in basketball last year!" Kaden shouted.

"Wow. You're the girl from the boys' team that played with a broken arm at state." Hayes seemed irritated.

"Yes I did, and we whipped your butt! In fact, I bet I could beat you now."

"You're on," said Hayes.

I face-palmed. My sister's personality is so loud and competitive. We just met these boys and she already had one in a bet. Nash and I smiled at each other before we sat to watch our siblings' game. I didn't know what it was about this boy...but I wanted to know more.
