 Chapter 19

Sleeping is so hard when your shoulders are being shaken. I mumble incoherently. She continues to shake me awake hoping I’d finally snap and open my eyes.

“Sade, Sade. Wake up!” Mary whispers into my ear. “I think there’s someone downstairs.”

“It’s the wind.” I say dismissing her. The loud clanking of pans says otherwise. “Go check it yourself.”

“No you do it. You live here.” She urges, pushing me off the bed.

Sighing, I lift the warm cozy blanket off my body only to be greeted by the bone shivering cold. I drag my feet out the room with Mary watching my every move with intensity. As I pass by the rooms I check what’s inside them. Each one is empty as always, nothing changed since Kale slept over. The loud clanging sounds of pans are there again. Each step I get closer, the sound of sizzling gets louder. Standing on top of the stairs, I'm greeted by the sweet aroma of bacon.

“What’s the menu today chef?” I ask Kyle who’s back is turned to me, busy cooking.

Looking at me over his shoulder, flashing me a morning smile “Bacon and eggs.” He says. I settle myself on one of the stools, plopping my head in my hands, still dizzy from sleep. “Gotta drive you to school today, my dad and brother’s orders.” He continues to focus on the egg he’s settling on a plate.

“I have a friend over.” As if on cue, Mary walks down from the stairs, hair flown up everywhere as if she just got down a rollercoaster. Her eyes spots Kyle and immediately her hands fly up to her hair, flattening them down.

Kyle raises an eyebrow. “You actually have a friend that’s a girl?”

“I have female friends all the time.”

Chuckling, he looks at Mary up and down. Ignoring my protest to stop making her uncomfortable, we all plop ourselves down and much on breakfast.

“This book is shit.” Jay grumbles from under his breath.

“You can’t judge a book without reading it from cover to cover.” I say. He’s right the book is somewhat terrible. They both die at the end, not a story I’d recommend to anyone.

“I mean, who speaks like this?” Exasperated, he throws one arm at the air.

Ms. Gillian’s head snaps up from the sound of Jay’s loud voice. She scolds him to keep his mouth zipped and continue to read the tragic story in front of us. Lucky her, she’s reading a completely different book. It’s probably romance, she’s a sucker for those kinds of stories.

The bells rings and everyone gathers up their things for lunch. The room is almost empty. Always taking my time to collect my notebooks, and pens. I feel a burning graze behind my neck. Looking above my shoulder, I meet the cold dark eyes of Jay. He’s leaning against the door frame facing me. Eye’s connected, neither of us bulges. I stand frozen with a burning sensation in my stomach making my bones shiver. Suddenly, the room feels cold giving my arms a good trail of goosebumbs. He turns his head, looking above his shoulder. Something must have caught his attention because he walks out completely without looking back.

“What’s taking so long?” Mary’s voice snaps me out of my daydream.

“Uh, nothing.” I narrow my eyes at her. “Don’t I usually meet you at the cafeteria?”

“Uh-huh.” She smiles, eyes bright. “I need your advice.”

We walk through the hallways, her right next to me. Holding up her phone to my face blocking my view, flicking through every possible picture of dresses ever made.
