Kate's POV
I sat on my giant porch texting liz. She's been all unsure and anxious about this whole sneaking around with Vic thing lately. When he's near she's fine and when he's gone she has those phases of complete guilt that turn into bursts of pure joy and happiness. Its cute and annoying. I was in the middle of texting her, trying to calm her in her guilty fit when Tony rode up on his bike.
"Hey, wanna hang out?" he smiles.
"I can't."
"Why?" He asks.
"Liz, she isn't doing so well."
I can't tell him that she's so emotional right now without telling him that she and Vic are sneaking around. They trust me not to tell. I can't be a rat.
"What's wrong?"
"I can't..."
"You've been paying so much attention to her lately... I understand you two are best friends and all but really, what are you two doing?"
"Tony-"
"I'm your boyfriend." he snaps.
"Excuse you?"
"I'm. Your. Boyfriend."
"Why are you suddenly being so possessive?" I ask as I sit up and cross my arms. "My best friend needs me..."
"I know she does but so do I. For the past month you've blown off any plans we've made because Liz needs you. Maybe it's time that she takes care of her own problems!"
"I can't just drop her!"
"Then maybe you aren't ready for a boyfriend Kate, because I'm sick of being blown off..."
"I'm not always blowing you off!" I yell.
"When was our last date?" he asks.
"Two weeks ago! We went to your house and watched Star Wars on Spike!"
"So come over and let's hang out. C'mon babe..." he begs as he inches his face closer to mine.
Our lips brush together and just as I'm about to kiss him my phone beeps and I pull away.
"Fuck it." He snaps as he pulls away.
"Baby, I-"
"No. We need to break up. This isn't gonna work out." he barks.
"Fine!" I shout.
"Fine!"
"Whatever!" he growls as he gets on his bike and rides off.
I'm not gonna sit here getting in trouble for comforting my friend! She needs me. I'm pretty damn sure if something happened to one of the guys he'd try to help them. He just doesn't get it. But he has a point, Liz has to stand on her own two feet. I grab my skateboard and head to her place. Vic's bike is there... Great... I walk up and open the door. I stopped knocking about a month after we became friends. She and Vic were snacking on pizza and watching a movie.
"Hey slut face!"
"Liz... Can I talk to you?" I ask.
I can feel the anxiety riding up on me like Slender Man reaching for a child.
"Sure." she says as she kisses his cheek and takes me to her room.
"What's up?" she asks.
"Tony and I broke up..."
Her jaw drops. "What?!"
"Shhhhh. I...-"
"Why?"
"Because... Well because of you and Vic kinda..."
I could see her jaw clench and she crosses her arms. "Care to explain?"
"Don't be mad..."
"How can I not be mad when my best friend is sitting here telling me that my relationship ruined her relationship..."
"Because Liz, whenever you're away from Vic you have these guilty and unsure fits and when he's near you're fine."
"What does that have to do with you two breaking up?"
I sigh. "Whenever Tony wants to hang out or go on a date you're having a fit or Vic has just left and I can't leave you because you'll break down! I came here to tell you that you have to stand on your own two feet with this. You chose to sneak around with Vic, this boulder on my shoulders isn't mine, it's yours."
"But I thought you supported us being together..." she gasps.
I could see tears forming in her eyes.
"Lizzybear, I-"
"GET. OUT!"
"FUCK YOU!" I shout as I walk out.
I'm met by Vic.
"What the fuck is going on?"
I grab his shirt and push him against the wall.
"You! You're the problem! You're sneaking around with one girl while dating another. Every time you leave she has fits of guilt, uncertainty, and anxiety! I don't care how much it bugs you or hurts Shay, break up with her!" I bark.
"Or what?!" he snaps.
"I'll tell her you're sneaking around an make everything ten times worse for you. Thanks to you Tony and I-"
"GET OUT KATE!" Liz shouted.
Vic stood there, defeated. He knows I have a point. He always knew.
"DON'T COME CRYING TO ME NEXT TIME YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR SNEAKING AROUND WITH HIM!" I yell as I slam the door shut behind me. I'm so mad I pick up my skateboard and throw it into the car window of the car that's parked as I walk away.
Vic's POV
Liz and I had just seen Kate lose it. I put my hand on her shoulder but she pulls away.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"She's right..."
"No she-"
"Yes she is. Vic... Break up with Shay."
"But-"
"The guys don't even know about us. Do you know how much it hurts and bugs me that whenever we go to see the guys you won't acknowledge me as nothing more than your friend!? Tony and Kate had so-"
"Had?" I ask.
"They just broke up Vic. Because Kate was keeping us a secret."
"You want this just as much as me." I said.
"I do. But dump Shay. Until you do... I will have nothing to do with you." Liz muttered. "I'm sick of being a dirty little secret, a skeleton in your closet."
I looked to the ground. Kate is right. I'm torturing myself with Shay... And Liz is torturing herself because of me... This is my fault.
"Liz-"
"Go." she whispers as she turns around and walks into her room. I do as she says because I don't want anymore trouble. I'm leaving but I'm not going home... I'm going to dump Shay. It's finally time. I need to man up and do this for Liz.
