Leon Belmont was nervous as he awaited the countess in the castle's great hall. It was a large and open space with a high ceiling that held shadows at every corner. The floor had several tables and benches used for dining. At the farthest end of the room was a raised platform where the dais was. This must be where Lady Anjou ate—devoured the blood of the living.
Large windows lined the walls, but they were all covered in heavy and thick curtains that seemed more like tapestries. The only light source came from the countless torches and candles that adorned the walls of the large room.
It was too dark for Leon's comfort.
His eyes were constantly scanning for movement, wondering if he would find her lurking in the darkness—ready to strike.
Why was there even a need for an investigation? It was obvious that the countess was a vampire. The whole castle was cloaked in darkness; every window was covered so that no sunlight could enter.
Alerting the woman of his presence had only served to make him vulnerable.
He tried to remain levelheaded, although his hands itched to go for the hilt of his sword, ready to draw and counter an attack.
Leon had never fought a vampire before, but he did have his fair share of encounters with demonic beasts.
He was the perfect candidate for becoming a vampire hunter.
Leon was an expert in swordsmanship, having become a knight at only sixteen. He prided himself in his knighthood and took duty and honor seriously. His bravery on the battlefield and natural skills with the sword garnered the attention of a secret group of knights; The Brotherhood, a group of elite soldiers that dedicated themselves to the cross and to vanquishing demons that opposed it since the dawn of time.
The Countess of Anjou was his first vampire mission of many to come.
The sound of whistling broke Leon's concentration. He had forgotten about his fellow brother at arms, Sir Trefor.
Trefor was appointed by the brotherhood to aide Leon in the investigation concerning the countess. He was a more seasoned hunter that had taken jobs like this before.
Leon watched Trefor with curiosity. The man was sitting on a nearby bench, leaning back against the wall as he looked up at the ceiling while whistling a tune. He seemed not to have a care in the world.
