"Ugh.."

Every part of me aches.

2 hours of needlepoint, 1 1/2 hours of literature classes, 2 hours of religion history, 1 hour of genealogy, 2 hours of violin practice and 2 1/2 hours of ballet.

I'm better off never leaving my bed ever again.

"Aveline, are you in there?"

It's Marian.

"Yes, come in!"

A tall blonde girl with soft green eyes walks though the door. She's holding a basket covered with a cloth.

"I brought everything you asked, the paisley, the horseshoe, the bluebird feather and the rose."

"Wow Mari, they are absolutely beautiful."

"Oh I know, and the man I got the feather from says that it brings good luck." She nudges me while showing off her goofy smile.

Marian is my closest friend in the whole world. She knows everything about me and I know everything about her. On days when I don't have classes we explore the castle and sometimes we steal pastries from we're she works. She's an assistant to the Head Chef so she runs all the shopping errands for him. That means she can look for things for me from the outside.

"I also brought these hors d'oeuvres from the kitchen. Chef says he's making them for your birthday. He wants to know how they taste."

"It's already time for that?"

"Mmmhhhhmm, just a couple more weeks. And to think you still haven't had the courage to ask them."

"Ask who?" I play dumb.

"Your parents. You still haven't asked them to leave this place."

"Oh. That."

"Why don't you? You have nothing to lose."

"This is different, I.. I'm just afraid they will say no."

"That's not so bad"

"Well, it is for me."

She leans on the vanity. "You need to promise me."

I give her a confused look. "What do you me-"

"You need to promise me to ask you parents tonight. Promise?"

"What I-"

"Prromissee?"

I sigh, "I promise."
