"hmm... let's see..." chan mumbled, reading the photo mission list.
"how about we do the heart one?" chaeyoung suggested. "it's easy."
"okay."
"felix! you stand here, put your arm up like this..." chaeyoung said, demonstrating the pose she wanted. "now, minjoo, next to felix..."
she moved quickly from person to person and positioned them, like she's done this a lot before.
once she was finished, chaeyoung walked to where chan was standing with his camera to get a wider view. i saw her frown as if she wasn't satisfied.
chaeyoung thought for a moment before rushing back to us. "wait, you and you switch," she pointed to felix and hyunjin, who did what they were told.
now hyunjin was standing next to me, again. i knew chaeyoung was up to something, but i decided to shrug it off as chan shouted, "ready? one, two, three!"
we accomplished more of our photo mission list and by the time we were around halfway through, we started to get hungry.
"i need food..." felix muttered, looking like he would cry if he wasn't given something to eat.
"why don't we go to the shopping mall to get some food? there's probably a food court there," chan suggested, and everyone agreed.
☆☆☆
the shopping center was huge. like, huge huge. i glanced at somi to see her eyes sparkling with joy.
but first, we needed to satisfy our hunger.
"who's craving some korean food?" felix asked, excited at the thought of lunch.
"come on, man, we're in canada! we can get enough of korean food in korea," jisung argued.
"but-"
"i mean, we don't all have to eat together," seungmin pointed out. "we can just split up according to what type of food we want."
"...didn't think of that," felix said in defeat.
the divide was pretty even - four of us wanted local canadian cuisine, and the other five asian food.
"let's meet up at two p.m. back here?" chan said.
i walked to a restaurant offering canadian cuisine with jisung, somi, and seungmin.
"hey, wasn't one of the photo missions a mukbang?" jisung brought up the topic.
"oh yeah, we should do that while we eat lunch," seungmin said.
"who's good at eating?" i asked.
there was a short pause, but all of our eyes unknowingly turned to jisung.
"what? why me?" jisung exclaimed, causing us to burst out in laughter.
"it's okay, we can all eat for the mukbang," somi said, still laughing.
when the food we ordered was ready for us to eat, we found out that somi was actually the ace at mukbang.
if we went through the videos we took turns taking of each other eating, i was sure there would be multiple clips of me just staring in awe of how much somi could eat.
and yet, after we were finished with lunch, the first words to come out of somi's mouth were,
"let's get some ice cream!"
"yes!" jisung chanted.
"aren't you guys full?" seungmin asked in disbelief. "you each ate like twice the amount of food minjoo and i ate combined."
"hey, that's a stretch," jisung said. "but come on, where's that ice cream at?"
somi's hawk eyes - well, that only worked when it came to shopping or food - found an ice cream shop in an instant. i was kind of full but seeing the sweet tubs of flavor made me hungry again.
"wait, shoot, i left my purse at the restaurant," somi realized.
"oh no, we should go back before someone steals it!" i said.
"i'll go with her to get her purse, you guys stay in line and order the ice cream," jisung said. turning to seungmin he said, "you already know what flavor i want."
"get me vanilla!" somi said before running off to find her purse, jisung following after her.
i noticed we were already at the front of the line, but i hadn't even had the chance to choose a flavor.
"hello, how can i help you?" the cashier was a friendly-looking woman, who smiled at us as she talked.
"uhhh, you order first," i said to seungmin, quickly scanning the different flavors.
"oh, are you two from korea?" the woman asked in korean, taking me by surprise.
"oh, yes! hello," we bowed to the woman, who seemed happy to meet people from her homeland.
"must be nice, going on vacation trips together when you're young," she smiled warmly, but i knew she was getting the wrong idea about me and seungmin.
"ah, no, we're not dating... we actually just met a few days ago through this group tour trip," i explained, sensing my face heating up.
"oh! i'm so sorry! i just thought, you know, you two look good together, so..." the woman looked embarrassed.
"it's fine, ma'am! it's possible to misunderstand."
"ah, why did i say that, i'll give you extra ice cream, i'm so sorry!" she started scooping ice cream when we hadn't even ordered yet.
"you don't have to!" i felt bad now. the lady was way too nice.
we decided to take whatever flavors she gave us, and we thanked her after paying and found a table to sit at.
i was dreading a time of awkwardness between me and seungmin but i was saved by somi and jisung's return.
"yah! kim seungmin! you knew i wanted chocolate, not mint chocolate!" jisung complained.
neither one of us wanted to tell him what really happened, so seungmin just told jisung to shut up and eat what he got.
"you found your purse?" i asked somi, who nodded.
"it was there right where we sat, thankfully," somi sighed in relief and started to eat her ice cream.
i saw the cashier lady in my peripheral vision and her words hit me again - "you two look good together..." - i lightly hit myself in the head. what am i thinking...
"uh. you okay there, unnie?" somi asked, confused.
"yeah, just a brain freeze," i lied.
"rip brain," somi said in english.
rip brain, more like rip heart.
