Meredith was sick the next day. I decided to stay with her since today was a full run-through/ seeing who knew their lines and the songs day. Meredith knew her lines, as we all knew. She stopped using her script two weeks after rehearsal started.
She seemed to be better by noon, but I stayed with her just in case. Meredith was napping when I got a call from Darren. I picked up. "What's up?" He asked me.
"I'm here with Mere," I said, "She's sick."
"Oh no! I hope she's doing okay," Darren said. I looked over.
"Well, she's been sleeping for the past few hours and," I lightly pressed my forefinger and my middle finger to her neck, "She still has a pulse."
"That's good. Well, anyways, I just wanted to say that I went on set and everyone misses you," Darren said.
"Aww. Well, I miss them, but it's good to be back here. I missed Chicago and everyone here," I said. Meredith stirred and I checked on her. Still asleep.
"Okay, I have to work now. I'll call you tonight," he said.
"Bye," I responded and hung up. I scrolled through everything on my phone. I had a few things from work that I should probably do. Meredith was still sleeping peacefully, so I got started on it awkwardly. When I finished, Meredith was still asleep and Brian and Robert were home.
"Hi!" I exclaimed, getting up and hugging each of them. "Why are you home later than I expected?"
"We just had to threaten someone," Brian said nonchalantly.
"I didn't. I just kept to myself," Robert said, weaving expertly around the furniture into solitude, not looking up from his phone.
"Who?" I asked Brian.
"I'll tell you later," he said, leaving in the direction of his room.
"She's here!" I called, pointing in the direction of the couch.
"Thanks," he whispered as I went with Robert. I could hear him talking with someone, so I quickly went across the hall to my room and called Chuck. I hadn't in a while.
"Why haven't you called?" He asked me the minute he picked up.
"Nice to hear you again," I said sarcastically.
"You spend a week with Darren and can't call me?" He continued to rant.
"I have an excuse," I said.
"What is it?"
"I'm very busy and I forgot," I said.
"That's not necessarily valid," Chuck pointed out.
"You're saying that like I actually care about how valid it is. I care about you and texted everyday."
"I do care! At least you texted daily," Chuck said.
"A huge commitment. Each one took me five minutes," I said, looking over to my wrist. "Stupid injury."
"It's not your fault," he said gently, knowing what was going on through my head. I leaned back against all the pillows.
"I know. I just... I keep blaming myself for this. I could've avoided him, but instead I went willingly," I said.
"See, he has control over you. He was manipulating you. Look, I may have not known you for that long, but I know that you feel guilt easily. When he said his bit about the reunion and stuff, you felt guilt and I know you wanted to make him feel better, despite all the bad he did. It's who you are."
"How come you know me better than I know myself?"
"I don't know. Benefits of being your big brother. So, to the point, you were supposed to be calling me nightly. Can you do that?" Chuck asked.
"Yeah," I said softly.
"Well, I'm going to go. It's a night where I feast like a king and feel like a king and exist as a king," Chuck said.
"Well, I wouldn't want to ruin your pizza and wine and Disney™ night slash 'king night,'" I said sarcastically.
"How dare you! I expect a call tomorrow. Bye!" Chuck said cheerfully.
"Bye!" I exclaimed, "Love you!"
"Love you too!" He said. The line went dead and I smiled. Finally a break from Darren. He was great, but how was a girl to only deal with one brother? Robert came in.
"Who were you talking to?" He asked me.
"Chuck," I responded.
"Got tired of your other brother?" Robert asked.
"Yeah," I said, glancing at my phone. From Clark: What's your schedule? Not a stalker, just wanted to schedule for our date? Should I call it?? ;) I made sure my phone was face-down before Robert saw it. I was, however, too late. I shut my eyes tightly and opened them slowly over the course of a minute. Overprotective bestie, activate.
