Underwater

Chapter 16

My nose stings and my heart is pounding. The current threatens to hold me under as I swim through the waves. The current takes my under and I hold my wearing breath. My throat burns along with my legs.

I fight through the dirt and fish poop that people call the ocean, trying to get above the water. My lips barely brake the surface before I inhale the salty air. Water trickles into my throat, causing me to gag. I spit the gray water back into the ocean, wiping my chapped lips with the side of my hand, which doesn't end up working considering my hands are salty from the water.

The island starts to appear and I fight against the waves, trying to reach the sand. Rocks surround it, acting like a barrier. All of the sudden something seems too easy. I stop stroking my arms and kicking my legs. I'm still moving. Faster and faster a wave carries me. I manage to dodge the first 3 rocks, laughing with excitement, feeling lucky. "No no no no!" I start to scream, seeing the mother of all rocks. "NO!" I scream louder, desperately trying to swim away as the wave carries me closer.

Tears sting my eyes and my arms give out, realizing it's useless given I'm barely 2 feet away from the rock.

I kick my legs harder, flailing my numb arms, still trying to get away.

I feel a hard impact.

Fuzzy dots start to appear randomly throughout my vision, getting thicker and thicker. I weakly squeeze my eyes shut, trying to get the dots to go away.

I'm plastered against a huge rock, my head hurting like crazy. The black dots almost spread all the way across my view. I struggle, attempting to climb the rock. The dots practically engulf me. I start to panic, scaling the rock faster. I dig my nails into the thick layer of dirt, trying to hold onto the rocks that jut out, starting to get farther apart. I reach the top, everything going black. I feel my body slump over, a searing pain going through my arm.

Please.

Don't.

Die.
