"10, 000 years ago, my ancestor was a member of the mighty Galran army, serving under Emperor Zarkon himself. He was there when Planet Altea was burned to the ground. He was leading the battleships, the one who gave the order to destroy the final remnants of the planet.
"It was then, that he captured the Alteans that had survived and fled, and he took blood samples. But not the measly blood samples that you'd get at a health check-up on Earth, oh no, he drained all the blood he could from those Alteans."
The commander paused, seeing the shock on Lance's face and the murderous glare from Keith.
"What are those looks for? The Alteans were going to die, whether or not my ancestor was there."
Melvark's lips quirked up in a mischievous, but malicious, way.
"After harvesting blood from the Alteans, a small portion of that blood was injected into my ancestor's bloodstream. Not enough blood for him to become Altean, but enough to heighten his Galran abilities. The remainder of the blood was stored away, passed down as a secret through my family. Every generation, the blood is renewed, using the blood passed down from my ancestor."
Melvark inhaled slowly, before continuing.
"Now this is where my sad, tragic tale starts. Because of the Altean blood, my family line has been blessed with powers unheard of for most Galra. I have the unique power of being able to cause pain to other Galrans. Not any other race, but Galra specifically. Here, let me show you."
He rose out of his chair to stand in front of Keith, who was sitting, cross-legged on the floor. Melvark reached out, lightly touching Keith on the shoulder --
And Keith screamed.
A horrible, painful scream that shook Lance's bones. The sound of it echoed in his mind even after the commander had removed his hand, and as Keith lay on the ground, shaking.
Lance shook his head, pushing the echoes to the back of his mind, only to hear Keith's ragged breaths. Lance leaned forward, about to help Keith, but the commander had not returned to his seat -- he stood in front of Lance, between him and Keith.
Lance watched, almost in slow-motion, as the Galran hand loomed closer.
He watched as Keith struggled to push himself off the ground.
He watched Keith's face, angry and defiant, mouth open as if he were shouting something.
Lance watched as the hand came to rest on his shoulder.
Lance shut his eyes, not wanting to watch anymore.
