Kori got curious stares at her slightly green blazer where'd she'd hit the campus's brilliant green grass, but she didn't care. Kori read a book and kept walking. She could hear snickers behind her back.
"She's so weird." One of the girls sneered. Her colleague nodded, scoffing at Kori as if she were an out-of-trend pair of shoes. Kori turned around. Sarcasm and iciness lurked in her eyes.
"You done, yet?" she asked coldly. "Your density is taking what little time I have."
Kori's skirt swished as she turned back around and continued down the hallways of the prestigious academy. She could feel the burn of hateful stares beam on her stained blazer. Kori twisted the dial of her locker and it opened defenselessly. She collected her things in her navy blue messenger bag and gently shut her locker.
"Thank whatever God there is that this is the last class of the day. Then I can head home and friggin' rest." Kori muttered to herself. Her head was so full of thoughts because she rarely expressed them. She would occasionally talk to herself absently because of it.
She strode into her classroom. This was her favorite class of the day. She didn't know why she liked the class, but she did. It was Honors American Literature. Kori sat down in her desk and whistled a tune to herself. She was the only one in the classroom. She checked her watch.
"Weird. It's 3:15. Class should be started." Kori wondered aloud.
"Yeah."
Kori whirled around to see a boy leaning on her desk. She yelped and stood abruptly, backing far away from her desk.
"You're a boy." Kori said a little loudly and very harshly. She was trying to seem like his sudden appearance didn't startle her. "Why are you here? It's an all-girl's school, genius."
The boy just stayed silent. He had chestnut brown hair and his skin looked like caramel, but a little darker. One of his eyes were blue and the other was red. He had a black mask covering his mouth. In fact, he was only wearing black clothing. It occurred to Kori that he wasn't even a student at any of the schools. She knew all the schools in her area required dreary uniforms. For the girls, the had to wear specific colors which coded how old they were. Not to mention they were forced to were mid-thigh skirts, white knee socks, and brown or black dress shoes. The boys had to wear pants, but that was the only difference. Kori, being fourteen, had been permitted to wear black and white.
"You aren't a student at all, are you?" Kori said tilting her head.
The boy's mismatched eyes pierced into her multi-colored ones. Once again, the colors swirled in her eyes, searching for what this boy was feeling. But the only result was hollowness. She blinked, causing the colors to stay stock still along with her stature. Something was off about him, Kori knew. She just couldn't place her pale finger on it.
The boy leaned over and got really close to her face. His face was stone hard in thought.
Is he studying me?, Kori thought. Despite the awkwardness, she remained still. It felt like needles were shooting up and down her body because she was mannequin-like for a really long time. Finally, he backed up and blinked. He moved his hand in a "follow me" motion and began to walk out the door. Kori stubbornly crossed her arms and dug her feet into the tile floor, making a loud SKKRRR sound that made the boy turn around.
"I'm not going anywhere, dude." she said, iciness hanging in her voice. "I have class."
The boy looked at her with a disappointed stare. Then he said in a stone hard voice that was barely muffled by his bandana.
"You're that big of a scardey-cat? It's like follow the leader. But if you want to chicken out, you can Kori."
Then he spun back around and left.
Kori stood still, thoughts shoving past others and trying to asses the situation. She looked at her watch. It was still 3:15. Then she darted after the boy, her footsteps barely echoing down the halls.
