"Hiya~ The name's (Y/N)! (L/N) (Y/N)! Nice to meet ya~"
"Greetings, fellow earthlings. My name is (L/N) (Y/N)."
"...(L/N) (Y/N). Pleasure to make your acquaintance."
I glowered at my reflection in the mirror, willing my lips to stop curling into the stiff and awkward smile that often seemed more like a sneer.
I was currently in the process of choosing an introduction that would define me for the next 3 years of high school.
The problem was, I couldn't.
"None of them seem right," I muttered to myself as I flopped backwards onto my soft bed. "This is why I hate moving..."
Frustrated, I stared at the ceiling, littered with an assortment of colorful, luminescent stars that a childhood ex-friend had chosen for me. After years of living, forgotten, in the back of my drawers, I had finally found it and put them up.
Hopefully, we won't be moving anytime soon. It'd be a waste to throw such an amazing gift away.
I sighed. Not only from the burden of moving around Japan all the time, but also because I would have to re-introduce myself, re-memorize everyone's names, re-assimilate in the school and to be honest, it could be quite annoying.
Sitting up, I glanced again at the full-length mirror across my bed. My previous thoughts scattered as I skipped over with a smile, observing my appearance.
"That being said, Hanasakigawa's uniform sure is cute. Well, at least cuter than the uniforms I've worn in the past," I giggled, twirling around and around until I was light-headed from the dizziness.
A knock was heard on the door, ending the high schooler's fun. I stiffened as my mother entered the room.
"Are you ready? I'm going to be late for work."
XxX
I stood, frozen in front of the silver, metal gates of Hanasakigawa Girl's High, staring at the large school as groups of students walked past, chatting among themselves.
"I'm getting a little nervous now...Ouch!" While I was staring, something (someone?) bumped into me. And being the clumsy me, I tripped on nothing and fell.
Good going, (Y/N). Your first day and you've already made a fool of yourself in front of strangers.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Are you all right?"
A girl reached a hand out to me, obviously wanting to help me up.
She was pretty. Like, super pretty. Her teal hair looks so silky, she must take really good care of it. And her skin's so pale! Do she not know what the sun is? I even have to slather huge amounts of sunscreen to prevent tanning!
"Excuse me?"
Oh, whoops. Got ahead of myself there. Great, this girl must think I've gone crazy now.
As I accepted her hand, she smoothly pulled me up. I dusted my skirt with my other hand, smiling sheepishly at her.
"No, it's my fault for standing in the middle of the sidewalk. I should thank you for bringing me back to my senses," I replied with a smile, ignoring my flustered inner self.
The girl looked over me, her light green eyes seemingly unjudgmental yet judging my very being - she had that kind of look.
When she finally spoke, it was a hesitant but curious tone. "I haven't seen you before, are you a new student?" she asked.
"I'm (L/N) (Y/N), nice to meet you," I replied with a smile.
The girl stayed quiet for a minute or two. Then I looked down and realized I was still holding her hand.
Sorry, unknown girl. Must have been awkward for you, right?
"Oh, sorry! I...I didn't realize," I apologized, quickly releasing her hand.
That was so embarrassing...I was so focused on other things that I completely forgot. And we're right outside of school too. How many eyes have seen us so far? I've just transferred here and already people will think I've gone senile.
Also, what's with this super cliche situation? What am I, a harem protagonist? Isn't this the so-called fated encounter?
Please tell me this is all a dream...
"Fufu..." The girl laughed softly and I flushed from embarrassment.
"...Hikawa Sayo." With a slight smile, Sayo introduced herself. I smiled back, with what seemed like warmth and not awkwardness I hoped.
We walked through the school gates in silence. Comfortable silence. You know, the kind of silenc when no one is talking but everyone is fine with it because we're all anti-social?
Yeah, that kind. Oh, not to say that you aren't anti-social, but...Wait, who am I talking to? Ther I go again, with my paranoia and childish beliefs that this is all some kind of book or anime with millions of people watching my every moves.
Kind of creepy, but hey, being the main protagonist sounds fun. And I...kind of want to, you know, fall in love. Be popular. Get confessed to. That kind of stuff sounds pretty interesting.
And I do stuff either because I'm forced to, or because it sounds interesting.
Otherwise, what's the point?
"(L/N)-san? Is something the matter?" Sayo suddenly asked.
"So um...Hikawa-san, I know we've just met, but could you show me where Class 1-A is?" I suddenly asked sheepishly while fiddling with my hands.
After pausing for a few moments, Sayo walked away. When I didn't follow, she turned around and nodded toward me. "Follow me."
"Th-Thank you! I'll pay you back somehow," I promised as we walked through the school hallways.
Sayo shook her head in response. "There's no need."
"I insist. When are you free? We could hang out sometime, if you'd like," I suggested.
It seems Sayo's as stubborn as I am. She shook her head again and gave me a faint smile. "There's no need to return the favor. It is my duty as a student of the school."
Of course, two stubborn people with different opinions won't get anywhere, so I gave up.
"That's too bad. Well, I hope we'll meet each other again soon. Thanks again for showing me to my classroom," I said brightly.
Sayo replied with a quiet 'you're welcome' and briskly walked away. I, on the other hand faced the door and gathered my courage to step in the classroom.
Well, let's hope this school year will go off without a hitch.
