ANYWAY ON WITH THE STORY
Chapter One: Awkward Reunions
There was no way I could turn around now. Well I didn't have a choice in the first place, it was go stay with Aunt Karen in Sydney or go stay with Aunt Karen in Sydney. But still. I was off the plane, I had collected my massive polka dot suitcase, and I was hanging around near the exit trying to work up the courage to go out and find Karen and Michael.
I hadn't seen my cousin and aunt in years but me and Michael had kept in close contact, always Skyping and iMessaging and snapchatting and Facebooking, the list goes on. However, talking to someone through a computer is totally different to seeing them face to face, and I was about to shit myself. No joke. It's bad enough having seriously bad anxiety about things like school and homework and my appearance, now I had to live with practically-strangers on the other side of the world. My bed back in London was sounding really appealing right about then and I'd have given just about anything to curl up under the butterfly-print sheets.
Anywho. No use thinking about home. Come on LIssy, get yourself together. They're your family for goodness' sake they aren't going to be that bad. Just get on with it.
After several more minutes of freaking out I finally mustered the ladyballs to walk out there along with the rest of the passengers from my flight. I watched as a girl of about four years old wriggled out of her mother's grip and sprinted across the room to a young man who must have been her father. The man scooped her up in his arms, showering her with kisses and spinning her around while she giggled happily, her arms wrapping tightly around him.
Okay, that's enough staring. I was starting to look like a creep. But something about the way she clung onto him made me feel nostalgic, remembering the days when I looked up to my dad as if he was a superhero. Those days were long gone.
"Felicity? OH MY GOD FELICITY!"
I was jolted out of my way-too-deep-for-an-airport thoughts at the sound of my name. Looking up, I caught the eye of a vaguely familiar blonde woman, grinning widely and waving around a sign with 'my wonderful niece' written in big bold letters. Timidly, I smiled back, making my way over to where she stood and within seconds she was pulling my into a tight hug. I tried not to cringe at the closeness, and very slowly I tugged on the sleeves of my hoodie and wrapped my arms around her waist.
"Oh Felicity, look how gorgeous you've got," she gushed, pulling back to look at me, "you look just like your mum. How was your flight, everything ok? No troubles?"
I was a little surprised at her display of affection and my anxiety was really starting to kick in but I managed to choke out, "It was erm it was fine I guess. I mean, like, it was good. Well not good, no one likes long flights, but, erm, it was, like, totally okay?"
It came out as a question and I mentally kicked myself for being so awkward and embarrassing. I'd been planning my greetings the entire flight over but no, typical me, I had to screw it up and embarrass myself. Thankfully Karen didn't stop grinning, in fact her smile grew impossibly wider.
"Mikey is outside waiting in the car, we couldn't find a park," she explained, leading the way to the big automatic doors. "You must be absolutely exhausted sweetie, let's get straight home and I'll whip up some dinner." By now we were outside and a cool winter breeze was sending chills down my spine. "Mikey is so excited to see you! Oh, look, there he is, that's our car, come on let's get going!"
I was so grateful that my aunt was as chatty as she was, otherwise there would be a heavy awkward silence falling between us right about now. Thankfully she didn't shut up until we had reached the car. As soon as Michael caught sight of us in the rearview mirror, he was leaping out of the driver's seat and pulling me into a warm embrace. Jesus Christ what's with these people, do they not see I'm not a huggy person? Do I give off a cuddly aura? No, that's impossible, I was way too antisocial for that.
Michael's voice was far more familiar than Karen's due to infinite Skype conversations, and the familiarity put me somewhat at ease. "How's my favourite cousin doing?"
I laughed at that. "I'm your only cousin, idiot."
"I know," he winked, opening the trunk of the car to put my suitcase in it, "but even if I had seventy bazillion cousins you'd be my number one favourite."
I opened my mouth to respond but Karen cut me off. "Alrighty kids that's enough chitchat! Felicity you go ahead and hop in the front seat."
"Lissy," Michael corrected as I did as I was told. Michael slid into the driver's side again and LIz got in the backseat.
"Hm?" Liz replied, looking between us. God this was awkward. I hadn't wanted to correct her, I'm too awkward for that.
"It's just Lissy, no one's called her Felicity in like a thousand years mum."
"Oh dear, I'm so sorry sweetie!"
"It's totally fine," I mumbled with a weak smile as Michael started the engine, trying to push away memories of my childhood that came with my full name. This was going to be a long year.
