When we pull up to the pier people crowd around the big bonfire in the middle. Emery and I get out of the taxi heading over to the crowd.
When we get closer the music starts to get louder, and the cheers of everyone grow louder. Girls dance around with red cups in their hands cheering while guys sit back and stare talking amongst themselves.
Some guys try showing off but none of the girls show any interest.
"This is amazing," Emery yells over the music laughing.
I'm not sure wether to agree with her or to sneak out to a much quieter place. I've never been to a party scene, my brothers made sure I stayed away from that life. They always wanted what's best for me and Dean made sure that parties stayed out of the agenda.
But this is a night that I should let loose, to let all my worry and fear go out the door and just breathe in the excitement. I never want to disappoint my brothers, but a little fun shouldn't hurt anyone... right?
A guy comes up to us shirtless with food stains on his pants.
"Welcome to the winter bash where we come as virgins and leave as changed men and women," he winks at me then looks at Emery biting his lip.
"Back off creep," Emery nudges past him rolling her eyes.
"Don't mind him he's always like that,"a girl comes by our side looking back at the boy.
"What's his name anyway," I speak up getting a weird look from Emery.
"Dustin or as the town calls him Horno," the girl replies taking a sip from her drink.
"Let me guess because he's always horny," Emery hands me a cup and I take a sip.
"Bingo hey I've never seen you two around here before are you guys new," she asks leaning against the table.
"No we're on a little getaway for the week," I respond taking another sip.
"Bummer you should see our summer bash; oh how rude of me I'm Amelia but people call me lea," she holds out her free hand indicating for us to shake it.
"Mavis," I shake her hand smiling.
"Ella," Emery shakes her hand after me.
Family rule is to never tell a stranger our real name in case they have ties with some people. My brothers always reminded me of the rule and never did I tell a stranger my real name. Emery just adapted to the rule because she liked pretending to be different people.
One time when we went to the beach she was a British princess who was escaping the CIA. Nobody really believed her but she had fun pretending to be British.
"I like your name Mavis it's unique," Amelia brings me back to reality.
"Oh thanks my dad named me after some movie from the 80s," I chuckle taking another sip of my drink.
Wow this drink is really amazing I should get a recipe.
"Hey what's in this drink," I blurt out interrupting Emery from her sentence.
"Oh I don't know Jake over there made it. He's a strange kid but every year his drink brings the best out of people," she replies and I look over to see a guy standing at the bonfire watching the flames.
He's standing so close to the fire but he doesn't flinch from the heat. He looks at me and we lock eyes for a second then I look away back to Amelia.
"So as I was saying," Emery begins again but my mind wonders off.
I feel so good right now, I feel like the happiest girl in the world! Like I can just sing and the birds will sing with me.
"That's when I farted," I hear Emery say which makes me laugh.
Emery and Amelia look at me with weird looks.
"Oh come on how is that not funny? She just said that's when I farted," I say in between laughs.
"Mavis I never said that are you okay," Emery puts down the drink coming up to me.
"I heard you are you saying I'm lying," I stop laughing looking at her.
"No I just,"
I interrupt her by taking off my jacket.
"Wow it's super hot but I feel like dancing let's dance," I smile grabbing Emery's arm.
"Is there alcohol in these drinks," Emery looks back at Amelia who looks at me with concern.
"No the drink doesn't have any alcohol in it. Jake doesn't believe in that stuff," Amelia puts her drink down coming by Emery.
"Woo I'm ready to get my party on," I shout spinning around.
"Did someone spike it," Emery asks putting my jacket back on.
"No I poured it myself I don't know what's happening," Amelia replies with panic in her voice.
"Let's get her out of here," Emery starts pulling me away from the party.
"No I want to dance," I whine resisting her pulling.
"I don't know what's happening," Emery panics looking around.
I see Jake move away from the fire and start following us.
"Hey Jakey love the drink man," I yell at him smiling.
Emery turns and Jake stops following us and looks back at the bonfire.
"We need to leave," Emery tells Amelia with her serious tone.
Ha serious tone. My name is Emery and this is my serious tone.
I chuckle out loud as Amelia and Emery shove me in a taxi.
"Airport," Emery commands and Amelia puts her hand against my forehead.
"She's burning up should we take her to the hospital," Amelia asks looking at Emery.
"No my mom will know what to do," she replies shaking her head.
I poke her nose smiling at her.
"I love you," I lay my head on her shoulder feeling very happy.
I can feel Emery look out the window trying her best not to freak out.
