¤ Calypso ¤
The bus arrived just like Nani said. I didn't realize until she hopped off the couch so suddenly. "This is it! My first day of middle school!" She swung her book bag in her hands as she spun around. "I can't wait to see my old friends!" She gave me a small hug. "Have a great day Calypso. Make tons of new friends. Ok?" Nani finally released her grasp around me. She swung the front door open, skipping cheerfully to her bus.
I stared at the second bus that awaited behind hers. My heart fell to the pit of my stomach. I slowly walked towards the front door, taking short deep breaths. "You can do this, You can do this." I was constantly repeating to myself. I closed the door behind me once I stepped onto the porch.
"Come on young lady! I've got kids waiting for me!" The bus driver yelled out as he opened the doors. I kept my slow pace towards the vehicle. My legs wouldn't go any faster. The bus driver rolled his eyes in annoyance. "You new child?" He scuffed. I nodded my head. "Ah. Get over your jitters, you ain't the first kid to act nervous." He closed the bus doors as soon as I stepped inside.
My eyes scanned the almost crowded bus. People were already staring at me. I could hear whispers from time to time. "Have a seat young lady. I gotta get moving." I quickly found a seat beside a girl who was looking out the window. She didn't turn around when I sat down.
The bus began to move and my breathing steady for a bit. "Yo new jit!" I heard a guys voice say. I didn't turn around. I ignored him. "Yo! you hear me talking to you!" His voice became close like he was right behind me. I felt some of my braids being lifted up. That's when I finally turned around. "What!?!" I almost screamed.
"You kind of cute." He grinned. "What's ya name?"
"Calypso..." I mumbled but he was able to hear me.
"Damn like that creepy witch from Pirates of the Carribean?" He asked.
"I don't know what that is...or who you are talking about. I'm no witch." I frowned at that word. Every time I think about it, Sybil comes into mind. Her wretched smile and glowing devious eyes. I looked down at my legs, the sight of them disgusted me. I wanted to become a mermaid again. Even though my childhood is blur from that past life, I always remembered the night I was changed.
"Hello? Did you hear me?" The guy said as he waved a hand in front of my face.
"No. Sorry." I said, shaking myself out of my thoughts.
"My name is "Zane" He smirked.
I watched as he swooped his dreads off to the side. "Nice to meet you." I forced a fake smile on my face.
"I wouldn't get involved with him if I were you." The girl who was still looking out the window spoke.
"Shut up Sedona!" He shouted at her.
Sedona quickly turned around, her eyes fiery with annoyance. "You hit on every new girl you see. Then you get them to sleep with you cause your dumbass friends dare you to." She was seething with anger with the way her words came out so harshly.
