Male cats and other felines actually have barbed penises.
This obviously means that sex is quite uncomfortable for the females.
The spikes have roles to play, however. The first one is that they keep the females from fleeing until mating is complete. Biting the female's neck during mating is also often done.
More importantly, the barbs cause her to ovulate and release an egg, thereby starting the process of fertilization.
