"what are you smiling about?"

you and jack sit through the movie,
laughing at different scenes, emptying the
popcorn and candy bags.

the movie ends and you exit the theatre.
it's much colder outside now that it's dark,
you and jack walk to the car talking about your favorite scenes from the movie, during
the conversation he notices you shivering

"girl, you're a vancouver kid you should be used
to the cold by now" jack mentions

"hey leave me alone you know i get cold easy"
you laugh

"you're right... I do know that... here, take my jacket"
he starts to remove his leather jacket

"oh no jack you really don't-"

"it's no big deal, i enjoy the cold,
but you need to stay warm"
he then lays the jacket over your shoulders

"well, thank you"
you smile softly

"no problem"

you both get in the car and he turns out of the parking lot to drive you home.
you really don't want to go home yet, you're
having a lot of fun as you always do with jack, but
you just want something more out of this night.
you're not entirely sure what, but you know you don't want it to end yet.

"hey uh- jack?"

"yesh ma' lady?"

"do you wanna go downtown or- something?"

"don't you have to get home soon though?"
he asks confused

"no, tristan doesn't care about my curfew."
even though he does, but you'll face any consequences that come your way

"well okay, then sure"
he makes a u-turn and heads downtown

-
he parks across the street from the river,
you both take the little paved trail that leads down to
the river walk.
along the river is all lit up with string lights draped from cherry blossom trees.
there are several street performers playing
various instruments.
you come upon this trio playing a cover of
Miles Davis
you and jack stand there side by side listening
to them play, jack drops five bucks into their tip jar.
you both walk a few feet back leaning against the railing that keeps you out of the river-
you gaze at the stars above.
it's silent and peaceful, you can hear the river flow
with the jazz playing in the background.

you look over to see Jack with his eyes on you
"whatcha looking at?" you ask him

he bites his bottom lip
"your eyes"
he pauses
"they really do sparkle in the moonlight"

you can feel your cheeks warm up as you blush,
you tilt your head to the ground as you have an
uncontrollable smile

he takes your chin by his left hand and lifts your head up to meet his eye level
"now what are you smiling about?"
he says with a little laugh

you stand there for a couple of seconds,
unsure of what to say next

he stands there with his hand still
beneath your chin
staring directly into your eyes with a soft smirk
just there enough to make his dimple appear

you take both of your hands and gently place them
on his rosy cheeks

he naturally moves his hand that was
near your chin now to your waist

you pull closer and flutter your eyes closed until
you feel his lips gently press against yours.
they are soft, but warm.

this is home
he is my home
