Being friends with the opposite sex and growing up with them either turned out really well or crashed and burned too soon for anything to develop. Well, that's what Oikawa was thinking now as he walked with you and Iwaizumi from volleyball practice to your neighborhood. Oikawa couldn't help but feel bitter over the fact that you and Iwaizumi were so happy with your lives together and he was just known now as the third wheel. When had he become the third wheel? He didn't remember it happening so quickly, yet here he was walking behind the two of you as you held hands with his best friend, talking about how your day went from terrible to almost shooting out rainbows all because Iwaizumi had given her a "cute" keychain in the afternoon. It wasn't even that cute, Oikawa thought, he'd been there with Iwaizumi when he bought the voodoo like keychain dressed as Godzilla.

The ring of your laughter in the cool night air struck a chord in his chest, almost painfully if he were being completely honest with himself. He'd had that feeling any time you'd laugh or giggle or smile anywhere near Iwaizumi. He figured it was for nostalgia reasons; he was remembering when you would laugh with him as small children when you both came across Iwaizumi where he'd slid down the slide into the mud at the bottom. Or maybe it was because he was hearing less and less of that laugh of yours the longer you and Iwaizumi dated. You were both so involved with each other that he felt like he was losing touch with the both of you. It was natural of course. Losing touch with friends over getting closer to your s/o was Of course, he'd never say anything out loud. He didn't want to come between the two of you, he knew you were happy with Iwaizumi. He just wished it was him that you held hands with. Him you kissed at the beginning and ending of each day. Him who made you blush with a compliment-

... He stopped walking. His neutral expression slowly dissolved into a frown and furrowed eyebrows as he watched the two of you carry on ahead of him. Of course. It made so much more sense now. The feeling he got whenever he saw you, the way your smile and your laugh made his heart do somersaults in his chest, the way your voice sounded like sweet music to his ears when he knew very well you couldn't carry a tune to save your life... He was in love. With you. One of his best friends. His best friend's girlfriend. As he stood still in the middle of the sidewalk, he tried to pinpoint when it was exactly that he fell for you. Was it when you were the one who would stay up until the wee hours of the morning listening to his insecurities about his team thinking he was weak? Was it when you stood up to his many fangirls when they started picking on you? Or maybe it was when you gave him your lunch when he'd accidently run out the house without his, and the huge smile you gave him when he surprised you the next day with three bento boxes (all with your favorite food) for the two of you to share at lunch.

The feeling of bitter happiness wasn't because he was upset at Iwaizumi for finding someone to share his feelings with. It was because he didn't want those feelings to be shared with you. He frowned and looked down at his shoes, feeling his heart drop to his stomach when he remembered all the times the both of you would playfully flirt with each other while Iwaizumi fumed in the background. Oikawa had always teased you, ever since you both were small children, that you shouldn't fall in love with him. He'd only break your heart.

It was with a wry smile that he looked up to see you both talking to each other quietly and glancing back at him down the sidewalk with curious expressions. He wanted to both laugh and cry at the realization that it was he who had fallen in love with you, and his heart was now laying shattered in his hands as he approached his two best friends, who were happily in love with each other. Blissfully unaware of how completely broken he was at his recent revelations.

"Iwa-chan~! ___-chan~! Here I am thinking you both don't care enough to wait for me to tie my shoes, but here I see yo-"

"No." You and Iwaizumi said at the same time before turning away from him, shaking with laughter as you both heard the loud whine of protest that left Oikawa's lips.

He won't come between the two of you. It would only hurt everyone involved in the end. So he decided he'd love you from afar. Be there for you as you for him. Forever.

A/N: Ahhhh I feel like this was going somewhere really good, you know, but somewhere along the way I forgot where I was going exactly and this came out... Honestly, I think it's better than what I've been coming up with with my own personal writings! Let me know what you all think though! I would love some feedback on anything you thought needed improvement or was good or the kind of style you'd like me to write in!
