i woke up to a crack of sunlight hitting my face. i groaned and sat up, stretching.
"Ash?" i asked shaking her a bit
"im up, im up" she mumbled starting to get up
i got up and put on my shoes before starting to pull the couch away from the front door.
once i finished Ashley stood by me, "ready?"
"as ill ever be" i shrugged
we opened the door and grabbed two sticks with sharpened ends.
"this is all ive got" she said
i grabbed one, and just in front of the gate a zombie was there.
"first walker of the day" she said in an annoyed tone
"walker?" i asked stopping her
"yeah walker, saying zombie is so lame, so they are walkers to me"
"well i got this walker then" i said approaching the gate
"you sure?"
"i gotta learn" i said getting a grip of my stick
i took a deep breath and pushed it against the walkers head.
one i pulled it out, he fell to the floor
"god, they are so gross" i said looking at it in disgust
"oh you haven't seen the half of it" she said sliding the gate open.
"where are we going first?"
"my parents house. i wanna see if anyone is there and even if there isn't, i know my dad has weapons hidden, well need em" i said
we walked for about three miles before we reached my street.
"finally" Ashley said breathless
i rolled my eyes and sprinted off to my house
"sam! wait!" she yelled attempting to catch up with me.
once i reached the front of my house, i froze.
i looked at it not sure if i should go in or not.
what if they're dead? i thought
but what if they're alive?
Ashley finally reached me and stood next to me, she bent down heaving with her hands on her knees.
"are... you gonna.. go in there?" she said in between deep breaths
i looked at her, "i'm scared"
she put her hand on my shoulder, "i'll be with you, no matter what... want me to go in first?"
i nodded
she walked in front of me and once we reached the door she faintly said, "its open"
my heart sunk.
"still wanna go in?" she asked
once again, i nodded.
she opened the door completely and began to walk in, but i grabbed her arm, stopping her.
"no" i whispered.
i got ahold of my stick and banged the door loudly.
Ashley watched me intently as i listened.
nothing happened.
"what was that for?" she questioned
"i figured that walkers can hear noise, so instead of just walking in, lets see if they'll come to us instead." i explained
"smart" she mumbled "shall we go in now?"
i nodded.
we walked into the living room and then the kitchen, finding nothing except some canned food.
i walked down the hallway and then into my parents room. i opened the door and sucked in a breath.
there they were, dead.
Ashley walked in not too long after me and gasped.
tears slid down my face as i looked around.
"at least you don't need to wonder" she said attempting to comfort me
i nodded and walked towards one of my mom's drawers opening them. i found her garage keys and her pistol with the holster.
i grabbed them and walked into my bedroom.
"sam?" she questioned me as i quickly began grabbing things.
i grabbed a duffel bag, a jacket and a belt.
i put on my jacket and belt and put on the holster with gun in it. i walked to the night stand by my bed and grabbed the picture of me and my girlfriend and shoved it into my pocket.
i walked out and went into the kitchen with Ash following me.
i opened a small drawer that was there and grabbed a some pocket knifes.
i put one into my pocket giving ash another.
i opened the back door and into the garage and there it was, my moms locker. "this is what we need" i said looking back at her
i placed my duffel bag down and opened it.
i took a deep breath before unlocking my moms locker.
i opened it and saw a bunch of guns, including a machete with its holder. i smiled. perfect. i thought.
i put guns into the duffle bag and passed a few to Ash.
lastly, i grabbed the machete and attached it to my belt.
i zipped up the duffel bag and threw it over my shoulder and began to walk out.
before i made it to the door Ash stopped me. "hey hold on"
i turned and looked at her. she studied my face for a second before softly asking, "you okay?"
i sighed and then mumbled a quiet "not exactly" before clearing my throat. "but what can i do about it?"
she made a sad face "yeah.. your right.. where too now?" she asked
"to find my girlfriend"
~~
we finally reached her house and found it the same way, with the front door open.
we banged the front door and nothing came out.
we looked around and looted the house. no sign of her or her family.
i sighed in frustration, running my fingers through my hair with tears threatening to spill from my eyes
"sam.. its okay, well keep looking"
i simply nodded at her and we left the house.
we had walked around for a while in silence before i saw a school.
"what are you thinking?" she asked as i starred at the school.
"they would have supplies here, food, some medicine maybe" i said "and besides well be close by the apartment were staying at" i added
"okay" she agreed "lets just please be careful okay?" she said giving me a look
"we will be"
we opened the gate at the back of the building and walked in, buses were scattered around the yard making it hard to see past the yard.
"lets climb one of these to make sure were clear" i said. i climbed the side of the bus quickly and then grabbed Ashley's hand helping her up.
i started looking around and towards the back entrance of the school there was a swarm of walkers.
"fuck" i cursed under my breath.
"holy shit, theres so many... what would that be called?" she asked
"like... like a herd?" i said not so sure
"yeah a herd...we can try to get them away from there and go in?" she suggested
"no" i said quickly "that'll be too risky theres only two of us"
she nodded, "so what are we gonna do then?" she asked
just as i was about to answer there was screaming coming from close by the herd.
i looked and saw a girl taking some down and running from them.
"we should help her" i said
"sam thats too risky we cant, we can-"
before she finished the girl fell and i sprinted towards her cutting ash off.
"sam!" i heard her shout my name as i ran towards her
i took down a few coming towards her and i grabbed her arm putting it over my shoulder
"lets go" i said helping her walk
we walked as fast as we could towards the bus and i ran to the door of it and opened it, i helped her to sit and shit the sliding door just in time.
within seconds a bunch of them began banging at the door.
"why did you help me?" she asked making me turn towards her
"i just had too" i said lifting her leg "did you twist it?"
"yeah.. it just hurts but its not broken i can tell"
i nodded, "we should still wrap it up, you have some cuts"
she opened her mouth to speak but immediately raised her gun at the emergency entrance at the top
"whoa! its okay" i said stopping her "its Ashley"
she jumped down and took lunged towards me grabbing my shoulder "what the fuck sam?! are you bit? are you okay?" she asked quickly all at once
"i'm fine mom" i said sarcastically rolling my eyes
she hit my shoulder "stop, i was worried your all i got right now"
"well looks like we might just have someone else" i said looking at the girl
"i'm sam" i said extended my hand towards her
"rosita" she said smiling, grabbing my hand, shaking it.
"i'm Ashley" she said waving
"so i've heard" Rosita said chuckling slightly.
"so what now?" Ash said looking at the walkers.
"well drive to the side of the school and park it sideways so they cant hey the then other side and well just go in from the front of the building" i explained
"and what about her ankle?" ash said looking at rosita
"i've got it" i said
i ripped a piece of my shirt and wrapped it around her ankle.
"well find some supplies in there that'll hopefully help her but for now thats what i can do for you" i said
we parked the bus the way i said and then started to suit up.
ash grabbed me and took me to the end of the bus "should we trust her?" she asked
"well find out" i said shrugging my shoulders "besides even if she turns on us, her ankle is pretty jacked up we have leeway."
she nodded and i walked back towards rosita "you any good with a gun?" i asked
"yeah i used to be in the army, i'd say i'm a good shot"
"perfect" i said handing her a few guns
"you two ready?" i asked
they both nodded.
"lets do this" i mumbled
