Chapter 4

Sophia

It had been about a month since my talk with Malcolm things were pretty normal between us. I was happy that he accepted the fact that I was a mom but I was nervous about how things would go when AJ met Malcolm. I hadn't dated seriously before so I wasn't sure how she'd react to me having a boyfriend. Amari had already remarried so she was used to his new wife and loved being a big sister to the child they had together.

I didn't like the woman because of her attitude but pushed it aside so that Amari and I could co-parent without any unnecessary drama. Which is why Malcolm and Amari needed to meet before I introduced him to AJ. I didn't expect them to become best friends but I did want for them to at least try to be cordial with one another.

Which is why I asked Amari to come over early before he took AJ for the weekend so that we could talk.

"What did you want to talk about Sophia?"

"I'm seeing someone and things are getting pretty serious between us."

"I am not giving your new man advice on how to have sex with you."

"That's not what I'm saying, idiot. I want him to meet AJ and I know that we came to an agreement that if I met someone they would meet you first."

"Who is this guy?"

"Malcolm Cunningham."

"Hold the fuck up! Please tell me you are not dating that no talent white boy I've been beefing with since college. You've got to be fucking kidding me Sophia, of all the men in the world you date him."

"He's a great guy and he makes me happy."

"So he's probably only dating you to fuck with me."

"Not everything is about you Amari."

"The hell it isn't. Look I don't want that man around my daughter and I'm not meeting up with him."

"That's not fair and you know it."

"Don't make me fight for full custody Soph."

"You wouldn't dare."

"Yes, I would. We both know I'm the more stable parent out of the both of us. It would be easier on you because of work and AJ can spend more time with her little sister."

"No. I'm not let your stripper/Instagram model turned housewife raise my daughter."

"She wasn't a stripper."

"What was she then because you don't become the face of Magic City by being a bottle girl."

"You've always had it out for Ginger." I rolled my eyes at the fact that he thought I was jealous of his wife.

"Why would I be jealous of Ginger?"

"Because she has me. I get that how we ended things was rough on you but you need to move on and dating Malcolm isn't going to make me take you back."

"I don't want you, Amari. I haven't wanted you since the minute I filed for a divorce. Malcolm and I have something genuine and if you can't get over whatever beef you have fine. AJ is my daughter and if I want her to meet Malcolm I will because both of them are special to me and I want them to have a relationship. And if you ever threaten to take custody of AJ again, I promise to make your life a living hell."

"This is why we got a divorce, you always had to make something a fight."

"No, we got a divorce because you didn't like the fact that I had my own career without you and thought I would be okay with you sticking your dick in someone else." Amari was about to say something else when AJ came into the room.
