But it didn't work...everything became worse, and the girls refused to speak or interact with anyone at their separate schools. Abby and Abigail became completely withdrawn from their surroundings. They refused to leave their bedrooms and they became completely catatonic: their bodies were stiff as a board in a single position, and they would not be moved by anyone.

At this point the family finally gave up. They decided they had done everything that they could, and stopped trying to separate Abby and Abigail ever again. That's when the twins began writing. But it was much stranger than it sounds. They wrote in elaborate, English dialogue, despite having almost never spoken it out loud to anyone else.

They did more than write books, however. The Roths' let the twins live in their own world. Abigail and Abby would spend the next several years alone in their room, almost never leaving. They acted out elaborate plays with dolls. Their parents shoved mail and food under their door, but otherwise, there was little interaction with the rest of the family, much less communication.
