Slate is a bit of a lucky protagonist in his own story. At a young age his father was demoted in the seven circles afternoon coming home injured from war. So Slate grew up being taught that the social hierarchy of his tribe was corrupt. He started a grass-roots campaign that focused completely around anarchy, and that went about as well as you think it would.
After a botched execution, the goddamn witch brought him basically back to life, and so now he's running his "Over throw the Hierarchy" movement underground, like any good politician.
