No time to lose

Clare's P.O.V

We wait for what seems like ages but is probably only five minutes. Then as I promised and Kate promised, Richard comes stumbling up the hill with Jacob leaning heavily on his shoulder. When he gets closer I can see that Richard is practically carrying Jacob. Jacob has a bandage in his a make-shift bandage on his arm which is Richard's shirt. The bandage is covered in blood. The bandages that I put on his eyebrow cut are long gone -probably fell off during the fight- and his forehead is a mess of blood from that. He also has a bump on his head which is turning purple. It's big enough to mean serious trouble.

"There's no time to lose!" Richard says. "We've got to get Jacob to the hospital. He's got a bad bullet wound and possible concussion."

"A bullet wound!?" Emma exclaims, awakening Annie. Richard just nods.

"Jacob!" Annie cries. She stands up and runs to his side. I notice that, though she's still weak when she walks, she seems to feel better.   "Is he gonna be okay?" she asks.

"If we get him to the hospital in time he will be alright," Richard answers.

"Richard, let me have a look at his bullet wound first," I say.

"There's no-"

"I'm a nurse. I could get the bullet out right here and now if I had to," I explain confidently because it's true. Emma cringes at the thought of it and gives me a frightened look that says, Please don't.

After Richard lets Jacob lie down in the grass, I carefully unwrap the bandage and peeked at the wound while still applying gentle pressure to make sure it doesn't bleed too much more. The bullet is in Jacob's forearm and it's deep. There could be damage to the nerves in his arms. This is bad.

"We've got to hurry," I say, tieing the makeshift bandage back on. Jacob groans softly and murmurs something. I realize what he's saying seconds later.

"I've killed him. I've killed him. I've killed him," tears squeeze out of the cracks in his eyelids.

"I know," I tell him softly, "but it'll all be okay now."

I couldn't have been more wrong.
