Matt's P.O.V
I quickly pull myself together. Clare went to operate on Jacob, leaving me with three sick kids and an injured little girl.
I gave Kate, Micheal and Emma some medicine but it only helped a little bit and Emma is still complaining and insulting me endlessly. Micheal begins to argue with her to convince her to stop but his fever is high and his energy is low. In the end, he drops out of the argument. By then, I can see a sweat breaking out on his pale forehead.
Emma's cough is becoming more and more frequent and it sounds painful. I offer her a cough drop which she takes willingly even though she complains that it tasted like old gym socks.
Kate is silent. She sits next to Emma holding a little girl who looks very uncomfortable. She looks like she wants to cry but knows that it will only cause her more pain. Her blue eyes are full of fear and suffering.
Richard stands awkwardly a few feet away from Kate. He'd been holding Annie before she'd suddenly remembered that Kate was her favorite person and asked to go to her to which Richard obliged with a sad, betrayed look.
Now, he asks, "Can you do anything to help Annie?"
"Yes," I reply. "I think an x-ray is in order. Everyone, please follow me. We must go to a different room."
Everyone walks out of the room close behind me. Annie walks next to Kate, holding her hand but she still looks a little fearful.
We enter the room but when I tell Annie to get on the table she just stands there, staring at the x-ray machine and cowering behind Kate like she thinks the thing might attack.
I don't have the time or patience for this right now. They could show up anytime now.
I sigh and repeat myself, "Please, have a seat on the table."
"Why?" the child whimpers so softly its almost impossible to hear. Still, it shatters my heart.
Luckily, Micheal helps me out. "Don't worry, Annie. It's just like taking a picture except this camera takes pictures of our bones."
"Yeah!" Emma agrees. "It's really cool!"
Kate smiles at Annie to show her agreement. So, Annie nods and climbs onto the table with Kate's help. The x-ray proves that Annie has two broken ribs. Who would do such a thing to break a little girl's ribs?
